Its going to be hard for alot of people to understand how a school district can complain about having to make cuts when they have something like $7 million sitting in the bank!

But the county is a seperate board than the city. They dont contribute to each other that I recall.

YDR, thanks for exposing what I believe to be a scandal of the first magnitude.

The "fund balances" represent over-taxation and under-accountability.

School Administrations love fund balances because they become their fun money; use for pet projects that aren't in the budget. Just convince five board members to go for the project and voila!

puts a new light on all those times the Administration says we can't afford to do this unless we raise school taxes.
Looks like they can afford to do things without having to raise taxes and threaten the teachers with furloughs.

For those of you who have been screaming about the teachers being the reason for all of the taxes being raised it looks like it is because the school boards and admin are squirreling away a little nest egg to fund the next big expenditure while blaming someone else.

You are responding to a York Dispatch story, not a YDR story.

Spending needs to be brought under control and there should be no property tax increases this year in any school district.

These extra funds could be part of the solution to that along with real pay freezes for employees and pay cuts for top administration.

Aye, but it showed up in the York Daily Record Topix index with a link to the story that included ydr in the url.

My bad but not excusively mine.

Anyway, congrats to the York Dispatch for finally casting a bright floodlight on the shadowy doings of our poor-taliking school districts.

Those fund balances affect the interest rates that the districts pay on their loans. Those interest rates affect the cost of the loans. Reduce the fund balance, up the cost of the loans so it isn't quite so simple.

Spend within the budget and reduce line items and there wouldn't need to be any loans. Bargain harder and smack the unions around and you can keep costs under control.

Then we could reduce the funds

So why is York City cutting their budget by 14 million? Why are they asking for a tax increase? They had a surplus of 11 million, where did it go?

Schools are a waste of tax payers money, the money invested and the result of the investment is crazy.Lets face it its like paying a garage to over haul your engine for thousands and finding out they only fixed your wipers.Tom Corbett and his people need to step up and fix this problem. Were talking millions of wasted tax payers money thats alot of cracker jacks.

Spring Grove!!!!- I still don't get it. With such a high surplus amount AND Recent NEW construction, why won't you sustain your expenses at the current rate without tax increases OR cuts to employees? Isn't the bond rate locked in for the payment period? You're killing us out here!! Gee, I wish my employer was as worried about my pension as you all are. Don't keep holding the kids education over our heads, you want your golden retirements. I think Corbett has the right idea after all. Let's reel everybody in and start all over.
How about anything over 1% needs voter approval??
