I agree with the city installing intersection cameras; I didn't use to be. However, I moved near one of of the earliest photo controlled intersections in the city. My own unscientific observation is that the photo surveillance has dropped auto accidents down to 1/4 of what they use to be at that intersection. Since Rochester is about 130 out of 185 of the worst US city drivers (Allstate), the cameras might even help lessen automobile insurance costs in the future with less accident statistics, not to mention saving injuries too. BRING 'EM ON.

The only thing I like about these cameras, is that they can be used to clear the innocent when the cops lie.

Agree. The cameras aren't there to harass drivers. They can help reconstruct what happened for the legal services 24/7.
NY has millions of dollars in vehicle/pedestrian crash and injury claims every year that don't have the benefit of an 'eyewitness'.
Going around the city by bicycle, I notice portable, temporary cameras set up to watch intersections. These cameras can be moved around to where they may be best used.
It may be Big Brother watching for some and if you unfortunately get a ticket in the mail, it probably really happened. Seeing is believing.

HOWEVER...some are so DESPERATE they will withhold the evidence shown on the camera footage.
Oh yeah, they will stoop that low to hide their misconduct.

But the Justice Department can obtain it.

Hold a laser pointer on the lens for a minute or two ... and you burn out the CCD.

Resist!
