What are peoples thoughts about raising minimum wage? Should a 16 year old junior in highschool be making $9 dollars an hour? Will this hike have a negative or positive effect on our local (rochester) economy and what will the effect be state wide?

The whole concept of "minimum wage" is absurd. It's disheartening that we as humans take advantage of one another for the sake of turning a massive profit

Well,
Since the value of the USD is less than half of what if was in 2009 ... everyone who works needs to more than double their income to make the same amount they did in 2009 (in terms of being able to afford the same things they buy)

With Quantivite Easing 4(printing money without a valuable commodity to back it) in full swing, they have been printing money 85 billion dollars a month!!! http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2012-12-14/qe-4...

Increasing the minimum wage is the least of our worries. Any money that you have in the back is being systematically reduced in value while it sits .... you better spend it while it is worht something!

Shouldn't a 22 yr old person who cant find a job be getting 9 an hour? Have you tried to live on a minimum wage paycheck? Doubt it.
Cost of living keeps going up, but not Min Wage or many others hourly pay to keep up.
I did live on min. wage for a while, and worked very hard to save money (not easy) I had to work 50 hours at the first restaurant (wouldnt pay me anymore more overtime then 10 hours) and about 15 to 20 hours at my second job to make ends meet. This was due to the fact that I dropped out of college and had to make ends meet. There are plenty of jobs that pay a decent salary if you have basic social skills and put together to a resume and put some effort forth. I found a job that paid 33k a year not requiring a degree of any sort. I dressed very nice for my interview and cut my hair shaved that day and I got the job. So i went from 70 hour weeks to 40 with 2 weeks vacation and medical benfits. I have lived both worlds. The jobs are out there when I got my job the economy was in shambles and no one could get a job. why don't we just all make the same wage and let the government tell us what to do. What happened to the early bird gets the worm and good honest hard work? Life is not easy and never will be. What do you think the business are going to do since there payroll cost go up?

I do not thing the companies that are paying min. wage are the ones turning massive profits like time warner cable or vavoline. The companies that are paying min. wage are the small busnisess who can only afford to pay that. So should the owner of a small business who took the risk financially to open it make less money than its employees? for example lets take a hots place. We here in rochester all love our garbage plates, but the owner of the hots place had to either buy a buidling to lease one, buy all of the equiptment, find a food and beverage destributor, remodel to make the place appealing to customers, keep the price of the food low enough that people will buy the food. After all that risk he or she should then pay all of his employees $10 or $11 dollars an hour starting to take some orders? I don't think a small business like that is turning "massive profits" at the cost of the back breaking work of a cook and a counter person to asnwer the phone and take the orders. small business's barely survive as it is. Why force them to pay a 16 year old whose first job it is that kind of wage. All this does is continue this sense of entitlement that we as a country seem to have. We all want a huge pay check and to work as little as possible. I'm sorry to say but the successfull people in our society are the ones that understand they have to work to get where they want and MAKE things happen. Instead of sitting around waiting for things to come to them.

When the dollar gets to the point that no foriegn country will extend us credit ... things will get real ugly.

The first thing to drop off will be the foriegn wars and the Welfare.
There will be riots in the streets as people are going to get hungery with no way to pay for food.

then the cops will stop getting paid. and there will be chaos. This is exactly what happened to the russians back in the 80's when thier money collaped.

The only orgization that was still functioning during the power vaccuum was organized crime. That is how Putin got into power.

exactly, all while NY and Obama are infringing on the 2nd amendment rights, trying to take " Assault weapons" and limiting how many bullets a law abiding citizen can have. even tho they say " No one is going to take your guns" its already happened in 3 cases in NY, while NYSP is illegally sifting threw medical records trying to find people on medication as an excuse to confiscate guns, I wanna know how many police are on meds that qualify and what will happen with them.... History shows that Registration will lead to confiscation then were left sitting here while riots and looting are happening. Obama is up to something I really am starting to think maybe he really is a NON us citizen but a Muslim knowing what he is doing to ruin this country, he seems very anti American, and likes to use emotional mourning victims to promote his agenda that is very disrespectful.

<quoted text>Screw taking guns away. Just this weekend I went to three places looking for .22 shorts none to be found. NO .22short no .22 long no .22lr. I wanted CB's and even those are nowhere to be found. Weak as an air gun .22 short or long CB's only good for red squirells are gone. Herb Phillipsons had three boxes of .22 magnum shotshells and that was it. They don't even need to take our guns when they take all the ammo for them.
That is their "backdoor" way for gun control because they couldn't get the firearms bill passed. Keep a real close eye on these anti-gun fools in both Washington and Albany. They will take away every one of your rights every chance they get. Just saying.

Increases to minimum wage are pointless they only increase inflation and increase the cost of living. They don't do anything to counter the decreasing buying power of the dollar. They actually contribute to it. You can give people more dollars but what is the point when those dollars have less value. It only serves to make politicians who support look good. As long as fiat currency is used there is no solution.
