Wasn't there legislation enacted requiring anyone under the age of 18 to wear a bike helmet while riding a bike?

I was thinking the same thing, but was told by co-workers that it is a law for anyone under 16?

Per www.iihs.org , the age is 13.

When I go biking, I do wear a helmet & I'm 46. Head injuries don't discriminate--they happen to people of all ages & I for one, do not want to end up "living" like a veggie for the rest of my life for the simple reason that I didn't have a helmet on. Sadly, many people don't think this way.

From Roch, NY area too. Law is 15 yrs. of age and younger for helmets. And...I thought that law was also that you weren't allowed to wear headphones (audio listening, etc. type) while riding bikes so that you could hear vehicles, etc. around you. People, when riding bikes teach yourself and your children that you are technically, by law, supposed to follow traffic laws. If you see a stop sign -- STOP! If you see a red light--STOP! and wait for green going your way. The cops don't ticket for these things because they usually hav to have a parent for a child and just don't want to mess w/anyone else. I personally think they need to cite anyone they see disregarding any bike rules on the road. It causes accidents for those on bikes and some of these people are just plain stupid on their bikes! I have had to break hard more than 1x in the city and in the country because of an idiot bike rider!

Darrell, a teenager from Lima was seriously injured after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.

Police said Darrell did not stop for a stop sign and entered the path of the big moving car. They also said Darrell was not wearing a helmet or clean underwear and was listening to rock music on his blue and white headphones when he was hit.

During the search for blame, several assisting deputies from a neighboring county noticed Darrell had been chewing Juicy Fruit gum earlier in the day and had recently had a crescent-shaped mole removed from his right forearm just days before he was circumcised. His bicycle was also very dirty and the seat had a strange smell.

Considering the abundance of contributing factors to the accident, police now believe the big car would have collided with Darrell even if he had been wearing a helmet and watching television in his bedroom.

To the dismay of police, the driver of the car is not facing any charges at this time.

You all need a life.

How about hoping the boy hit makes a quick and full recovery.

Seriously, is now the time to get on a soap box about helmet rules and regulations???

I think the proximate cause here was failing to stop at the stop sign when there was a car coming, with the headphones being contributory. As for the helmet, most bicycle helmets are less than useless in a collision with a motor vehicle. The design impact speed for a bike helmet is 12.5 MPH and above 20 MPH they are of little benefit. And I say this as a guy that was hit at 65 MPH riding a bicycle and lived to tell about it because I was wearing a helmet. I have brain damage and difficulty speaking, but I'm alive. Had I died my wife would be getting survivor's benefits and payments from the state, but because I lived and the hospital lost the records of my emergency room visit I can't get disability to cover my expenses from not being able to work. Now how much good did it do my wife that I was wearing a helmet?

Ohh god, now the NYS lawmakers are going to make a law so no-one will be allowed to wear head phones while riding a bike.

The law for a helmet is 14 and under. Ask any cop or state ranger. I wear head phones when riding but I am always looking behind and in front of me for cars coming. I also don't run throught stop signs. People just have to use common sense.

If you outlaw people from wearing headphones, then you must outlaw deaf people from riding bikes too, they wouldn't be able to hear traffic approaching either.

Did anyone see the news tonight about all the police officers that are sent for a whole weeks of training, in how to ride a bike??
Can you believe it???
It takes grown men 40 hours to learn how to ride a bike.
You'd think if they needed some cops to ride a bike, they should have just used cops that already know how to ride a bike.
What a waste of money.

Police bike patrols know how to ride a bike, the 40 hour course is on how to ride like a cop. Cops know how to drive and spend at least a week learning how to drive like a cop, but nobody complains about that.

And helmets will never prevent a wreck, they only come into play after wrecks begin.
