What does a cell phone plan cost these days anyway?

It depends who you are. If you receive any kind of welfare, food stamp, cash assistance, SSI, etc., you qualify for a FREE CELL PHONE!

If you are a hardworking taxpayer it can cost anywhere from 60 - 100 dollars a month for a comparable plan! How outrageous! Why should anyone pay for the convenience of someone else owning a cell phone? This is glaring example of what is wrong in this country, if you don't work you can demand the same things that people have who do work, and the government will actually give them to you!

Section 8 housing
Furniture vouchers
Food stamps
Cash assistance
Cell phones
SSI for drug users/alcoholics
Two free meals a day for your children in school
Free child care for your children when school ends
This is NOT an exhaustive list!

Where does it end? Why even work anymore?

This is way we have to vote all of the liberal bleeding heart democrats of of office now.The dems take from the working people and give our money to the lowlifes just to buy their votes. If people can't see that the dems are making our country into a 3rd world crap hole they are blind.Vote all of the trash out, they think we work for them, they forgot that they work for us. God I hate the liberals fools, they have no clue of what they are doing to our country!!!

As I can't stand welfare recipient's the fact is these phones yes phones. Because you can get 1 from Safelink and one from Assurance wireless. These companies don't charge the Government for the phones but use them as a write off. Now the kicker is safelink is actually now not able to use there phones as a write off due to they are profiting out the wazzoo on these "free phones" they give 250 minutes a month free but the knee grows love talking on them so much they use these minutes in a week and then go and purchase additional minutes through the provider Trackphone at a rediculous high price as much as 25 cents a minute. As for assurance wireless who also offers the phones through Virgin Mobile idk if they are making as much but seeing as Other cell phone companies are looking into starting similar programs im banking it's because theres a good profit margin in getting Knee Gros to spend on pre paid minutes.

I have it right, although companies like assurance and safelink kick in the phone, they receive subsidies from the governments lifeline program (aka tax bucks).

They also receive money from the tax we are all forced to pay on our phone bills for low income families.

"Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it." Because the company giving the free phone is making a profit off the idiots they give them too. Do some research MR. Waste these compaies recieve 0 tax dollars.

Ugh....

The telcom companies are forced to collect that money from the consumers, check your phone bill if you pay one. That is a tax.

AGAIN, the PHONE ITSELF is provided by the company, NOT THE AIR TIME.

Source:

SafeLink Wireless was created by TracFone Wireless, Inc. when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently approved the company to offer Lifeline -- a public assistance program that ensures telephone service is available and affordable for low-income subscribers. SafeLink Wireless applies the Universal Service Fund subsidy to an allotment of free airtime minutes and TracFone provides the wireless handset at the company’s expense. Instead of receiving a subsidized monthly telephone bill for Lifeline service, SafeLink converts the total amount of discounted service into minutes each month for one year. The cell phone offers in-demand features: voicemail, text, three-way calling, call waiting, caller ID and access to 911.

READ SUBSIDY
READ PUBLIC ASSISTANCE

This is TAXPAYER FUNDING for CELL PHONES just as I said in the opening post. Why do you defend this practice?

This is from the safelink website.

TracFone Wireless believes that cell phone ownership is a right and an important tool for individual success in today's world. Everyone should have a cell phone without the need for a contract or a high credit rating.

So, you see, cell phone ownership is a right. Does anyone out there believe cell phone ownership is a right?

Universal Service Lifeline programs such as Assurance Wireless are not just for citizens on assistance programs. If any of the hardworking people who have commented here should lose their jobs and their income falls below the poverty level, they can apply to programs like Assurance Wireless to receive a phone to help them find another job. The money that they will save on phone service can then be used to feed their children or pay their rent or mortgage. Unemployment is at an all time high. Layoffs are happening all over the country. Programs like these are a great help to those who are not working due to no fault of their own.

SSI is NOT for drug users or alcoholics.
Please get your facts straight before making such an ignorant statement.

I don't see nothing wrong with providing free meals to children in public schools. Some of these kids don't get to have dinner at home (I know because I was in the same situation).

I also don't see nothing wrong with providing child care to those single mothers or hardworking couples who are actually going out there and working. Only those who WORK get assistance with childcare.

I agree with you on one thing...tax payers shouldn't pay for someone else cell phone unless a person really needs it (like a domestic violence victim, elderly or sick person, etc.)

It is advertising hype - you would do the same thing if you were asked to write their copy. Either justify it or make it a right.

Sadly, its becoming fashionable to be poor. You get a lot of free stuff compliments of the taxpayers, and there is no longer a stigma (like that ever mattered).

And that will never happen because they'll just change parties whenever they wanna and go the same way again.. IT is a never ending cycle.. What YOU should do is get a .22-250 and go rid the world of them all, then when they realize that they could be next in line for a grave, they'd quit being so Liberal and Conserve for the good of the people! I have a Tracfone cell and I don't pay anything other than minutes time and what they do with the money from the card I have to purchase every month don't bother me at all..$45 a month for Unlimited minutes, texts, and internet use.. I average around 325 minutes a month...

You too, Pal.
I'd like to extend Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah (belatedly),
Happy Kwanzaa, Absolute Festivus, Boxing Day, Winter Solstice, and careful driving. Keep your head up when you skate, and pass that joint.
