More Corporate Building Pushes Out Little Guys

Hess Mini Mart. We've all seen them. Gas, pop, beer, cigs and newspapers. Woo hoo. Do we need another one? Apparently so...and right next to another gas mart on Buffalo Rd and Union Street in North Chili. All this at the expense of a few small businesses. Not bad, huh?
When I moved to Chili 8 years ago there were plenty of small businesses thriving here. I moved my family, my parents and my mother in law out here to Chili. I then moved my business out here as well. Great community, nice neighborhoods, values, etc.
I moved to Chili-Paul Plaza and had a nice business there but had continuous run-ins with the former owners. I left at the end of my lease and went to that nice little corner in North Chili.
There was a pizza place on one corner (now turned into Family Video)...a nice old building and a plumber on another (the plumber is gone and yes, it's the soon to be Walgreens)...accross from Eckerd's Drug store, mind you. Now, "my" corner is now going. I moved in and there was Alexander's Market (there for 50+ years), a laundry (now closed), Cordello's Pizza (moved) and was replaced by Terry's Take Out and myself. Well, now we have to go too. Why? Another gas station?
OK, being a businessman I understand progress and I am all for it. But where do all the little guys go? Well, they close or get forced into the larger plazas that are overpriced for small business.
I have had my business for 16 years and have grown every year. I run a clean operation for the kids of this town to go. A place that parents feel comfortable leaving them. My prices are fair and you don't have to drive 30 minutes and fight for a parking spot...only to overpay for your items. You get personalized service and yes, we do remember a lot of your names.
My business is Heckle & Jeckle Collectibles. I sell sports cards, memorabilia, non-sports cards like Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon along with Video Games and Systems.
It would be great to stay out here...where I have brought my family...where my kids go to school...where we are part of a community. Now I have 10 weeks to figure out where my life will continue. Pretty sad.
All this on the heels of a proposed Mall on Paul and a year long fight for a landmark building.
In my opinion, this town needs to worry about what it already has...or look back to what it had...but be careful what you wish for....unless it's a gas station or a pizza, you may be out of luck.
Hopefully somebody will read this...and if you have, thank you.
