DMV will take that form and run with it ....it starts the investigation that will only go BAD for the person that is selling more than 5 vehicles per year..Since the cl adds are referenced it only takes a little reseaech on the part of the authorities and connect the dots .....dah...do you have a cl account...check it out all you adds are available to look at..add up the cars listed...dah....dah....dah..cl is wise to this abuse and are watching it , keep flagging tbe adds it will bring attention to the cheaters....cl does classify the section as " by owner, private party sales" that should say it all....dah
Yah do that, and remember if there is 100 dealers you will need 100 forms.

I cant wait until CL comes after the dealers for violating the terms of service and when they are done with them it will be NY states turn to come after them for fraud.

And not for nothing the word about this forum must be getting out as even though some idiot dealers are still posting as owners it seems like maybe some are not wanting to get called out.

But not to worry I will post the links to their ads if they do !!

Flag, flag and flag some more....while your at it go over to Buffalo and do the same thing...after all most of the DEALERS post on both sites...I sent a very polite and informative email to the powers to be at cl, I have to believe they are well aware of the dollars lost to the cheaters, polluters..loosers...lowend dealers...

After all the only reason I know about this mess is I'm in the market for a car and the last thing I want is someone else's throw away...I want to look the person in the eye that owned the car and go from there, not a person that is buying and selling cars to make a buck on me....

What if I start making ads on cl as a car owner even if i'm not selling a car?? I could find other peoples pictures and post an add in the owners section as if I'm selling the car, when I really don't even have a car?
And what if I have post more then 5 different ads, does that mean I would have to be registered as a dealer??
If I did that it would be funny, and it would be against the law, and it would get nickbo pissed off.

It's simple to pick out a cheatin lowend dealer...no reggy stickers on the window, already inspected, paper floor mats, prices in the windows, parked in repair lots or a car on the street with out plates ...look around in the pics-crashed cars, other cars with out plates, signs on buildings..google the phone number..do a cl search on phone number..do a cl search on the sellers name...or just ask him if he's a dealer(who's name is on the title)...
Feel free to add to this list.......

Spot on !!!!

One of the main reason these small dealer's try to scam people is the fact that most savvy car buyers simply do not want any part of them. The reason why people want to buy from an actual owner is the ability to find out the detailed car history and most individuals will be honest about their own cars, dealers on the other hand are just in it for profit.

These small dealers have their place in the market for sure as they have the lower end and for some the entry level cars, they just need to advertise in the dealer section.

I like to see what else he owns and how it is taken care of...It's pretty easy see if he just beats the crap out of his stuff....I use what I own but I take care of it..When I sell something it is race ready...If something is broken or worn out it gets taken care of...

I don't know about that, cause I flag your postings and they are removed almost right away.

From what I know about CL it does take 3 separate flags to take down a post. If more people just flagged the offenders they better that section will be for everyone.

Why do Dealers abuse Craigslist? Because it works. Breaking the rules pays.

Years ago Craigslist had only one category; Cars for Sale. When they split the category into "By Owner" and "By Dealer" Dealers who correctly posted under "By Dealer" noticed a significant drop in responses to their Ads.(CL users apparently focus their efforts to "By Owner" in an effort to find a "better deal".)

So, of course, some dealers post under "by Owner".

Now that CL charges dealers you can expect even more dealers will be moving to "By Owner".

Prospects find cars by a)- focused search or b)- serendipity (e.g., the ad just happens to be near the top when they pull up Craigslist).

Spamming works. It kills me to say that but the shear number of Ads seems to trump following the rules and Ad quality. A focused search that shows 30 cars may turn out to be ALL for the same car by the same dealer. So a 2nd dealer posts one, and only one, Ad for a similar car and now the user search shows 31 cars. Tough luck for dealer two. You'll never see him for all the clutter.

Dealer spam was out of control with something like 1500 and better ads per day. CL did what they had to do,$5/ad was more to fight spam than for revenue. And, to some extent, it seems to be working.(Myself, I kinda miss the old way. I'd find a car and then vet the dealer. BBB was one way. Another was to see if they Spammed CL. If they did I'd stay away!:)

With paid Ads Dealer Ads are much more visible, Dealer Spam dropped off to almost nothing; it's easier to find a car, much less clutter.

And, of course, some of the bottom feeders have moved to "By Owner" (and some have always been there). You can find them, as already mentioned; multiple ads/cars but it's hard to ID them. The days of simply "Googling" phone numbers are pretty much over (after all they don't used their "Business Phone", they use a cell number).

Whose rules? What laws?

The most obvious is Craig's as per his own "Terms of Use". One ad per car (and only ONE region; NOT in Roc. AND Syr. in but Roc. OR Syr.), ad must be about one and only one car and must be about A car (NOT parts, services, financing, insurance, etc.); owners "By Owner" and dealers "By Dealer".(Break a "contract" go to court.)

Another might be the Attorney General's Office, Department of Consumer Affairs. Here's a link to their publication regarding Dealer Advertising (where they also mention 5 cars does a dealer make :) They about not only fairness to the consumer but also about fairness to other dealers.

Very nice well written piece CL spam. You are correct it is the bottom feeders that are spamming the owner section of CL. I like the idea of contacting the attorney general of NY State is this matter as I think that I will send him an email with a link to this posting to see what the general public is talking about.
