There are 1 comment on the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle story from Feb 22, 2013, titled Web Essay: No 'peace and quiet' in Holley. In it, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports that:

In response to Borden MacMillan's letter, published Feb 18, which stated that those who traveled from other areas of New York to protest Holley's hideous Squirrel Slam should stay out of rural areas and not disturb the "peace and quiet," I have to ask, what peace and quiet? I was raised in holly new York. my parents were poor and we did not own a farm. My dad was a hunter with a bow as well as a gun. If my dad did not have this skill, we would have starved. My mom hunted too, while still raising three great girls. And we ate squirrel sometimes. or rabbit, quail, pheasant, dove, deer, and even woodchuck. We ate frogs, catfish, northern pike were often in our bathtub for dinner. even snapping turtle.
If an animal was hurt or injured, we took it in. We learned the value of life at the same time. Suprised? Don't be. We did not hunt for game or sport. We followed the rules and never poached. If we found baby animals in the wild let to die we took care of the. then let them loose....it was the best upbringing a person could have had. during hunting season friends got together to socialize, play cards, laugh. We bonded. This event in holly was not a waste of life but a celebration of a WAY of life. These people who participated ate the meat! They hunted just as our ancestors did before us. This is the cycle of life..we just don't remember any more.

I read that if all slaughter houses were made of glass, people would not eat meat anymore.
we had guns in the house all the time and not once did we have incidents in our community.
People need to remember we are a very large country with very diverse cultures...please let use preserve ours...
