Absolutely! Until they become a legit NBA-D League team they're not going to draw crowds. Rochester is a huge basketball town. I remember 3000+ crowds at the Dome for Zeniths games. But then they had pre, current and post NBA talent on the court.
The notion that their fan base is comprised only of a bunch of "gimme goobers" is garbage. When Rochester had or hosted NBA/ABA teams. Almost all games we're sell outs.

Word has it that for the game Thursday night the actual crowd was in the 250 range ... why even bother ?

DD.. they must be bleeding cash, right? Renting the WM seems ridiculous when they should be playing at a YMCA or someplace like it,,,(like Buffalo and Erie do)...

Yes they can get away with just playing at a local high school gym instead of the BCA. I have to feel sorry for them though as fans should be coming out for a 5 dollar ticket . Not many places one can go for a night of entertainment for that price. To many of their fans want a hand out.

I know they hired a new management/marketing group this year. That obviously was a mistake. That league is a joke too..

Yes from what I have heard O is no longer involved in the marketing of the team and seeing that he is a radio station marketing expert the change is clear by the empty stands.

also sad is the complete lack of coverage for the Razorsharks..(see today's non-article on a game day).. saw that the guys were at the Strong Museum yesterday for an appearance. The team works hard at being fan and community friendly... I really think a big part of it is the bogus league they are in. According to the Erie paper yesterday their game against Buffalo was mysteriously postponed.(due to technical difficulties ???) Also, West Virginia folded with many horror stories documented. If they are serious about basketball here they have to move to the D-League for credibility. I don't think that will happen as the local owner's brother owns the PBL.... zero credibility in my book...

Yes this is such a bush league that does hurt their credibility with fans however that does take away from the fact in the past they averaged close to 5000 per game and now they are lucky to draw 500 fans.

You keep saying that, it doesn't matter what you give away free. People will line up to get it. There's no question they are a solid team. But look at the teams they're playing against.

BB I am a huge sports fan and I go to ALL of our local teams games. Plain and simply put it is a matter of fact that more black fans come to the Razorshark games than ALL of our other teams combined. It is not a racist statement at all just a fact by years of observation at these games.

Yes people will come for free but the R Sharks need more of their core fans to come support them when they are not getting in for free.

This has been a huge issue with the team and a good portion of their fans for years. If it was not for the owner and his VERY deep pockets this team would of folded years ago.

I am just pointing out a fact to connect the dots.

DD.. Once you set the precedent that everyone gets a handout.. It's impossible to reverse it. You can't put the genie back in the bottle..

Your perceptions don't make black people the teams "core fans"....a core fan is anyone who consistently purchases tickets to attend games. Give always are intended to build that core fan base.
Without question, the giveaways targeted black people. But that marketing gimmick doesn't make them "core fans". Had the target been another demographic, the house would have been packed with that group.
You can Google this but, across all sports. The typical fan or what you call a "core fan" is a white male, 18-49 years old. If you draw a comparison to the NBA. The typical fan is a married white male, average age of 34 with a household income over $75K.

Absolutely.....but with the dismal attendance. I think the idea was to make up the difference, or at least off set them, with concession sales.

Well this was a stupid idea as the R Sharks no not get a share of the concession revenue, only the Amerks and K hawks get a small percentage get a piece of that cash cow.

I took in the game yesterday and they crowd was maybe 1200 actual fans. As I continue to point out the R Sharks put on a great show for a very affordable 5 dollar ticket.

What I found disturbing is the fact that once again this year the team had a problem with kids fighting in the arena. Funny how they do their best to keep this quiet. Seems that a couple of games ago the team did give out free tickets to students at some select city schools. And just like last year these kids came to the game and started trouble. From what I hear there was a HUGE police presence at the last home game and there was posters all over the entrance that youths under 18 needed a parent guardian to gain entrance.

That alone hurts their attendance no wonder why the team tries to keep it quiet.

DD,BB..

If I owned the Sharks I would move them to a suburban gym and heavily market to the above mentioned NBA fan demographic.

Hence, the attempted Dome Arena purchase.

Stupid?? Really??
There are five main revenue streams between the BCA(SMG) and the R Sharks. The gate, advertising/sponsorships, concession, merchandising and build rental. All of them dependent on attendance.

SMG makes no money with an empty building but, also isn't going to open up the building to lose money.

I don't profess to know the actual arrangement but, with attendance numbers being what they are. One can surmise that a supplemental arrangement has been made to keep the team there and make it financially viable for both parties.

Knowing what I do about sports/entertainment events, there is more money to be made at the concession and t-shirt stands than the gate.

I know where your going with this but, it's a moot point.
How often do you hear about fights at Amerks, K Hawks or Bills games?
Almost never! And we both know they happen at games across the board.
You're finding it acceptable for one group of fans to have fights and a problem with another.

Here is where you are wrong !!

The main reason that was driving the RSharks to look at their own areana is the ability to create revenue from concessions. That is the cash cow for any of our local teams just look at the Red Wings botton line as they are the kings of generating revenue from concessions. The R Sharks also want to have more prime weekeknd dates to choose from.

Both the R Sharks and the Lancers speak openly about this issue as yes the are getting screwed by arena management. Heck even the main tenant the Amerks only get a very small portion of the profit even though they are filling the arena.

SMG has no foot in the fire so to speak as even with 500 fans in attendance they are still getting paid to open the doors as they are not losing cash. Sure they want bigger crowds to drive sales through the concessions but they are still collecting rent.
