I think that yes, a few generations are lost. They are too broken and can't or won't be fixed. The only hope is to concentrate on the kids now, Get them educated and in parenting classes and start over. Try to make that group functional.
How else do you fix this?
Cut off welfare to unwed mothers? Make their families take on the burden?

Rather than blaming Lonsberry for speaking the truth, why can't these people break the very cycle that is keeping them down. It's not the public's responsibility to raise children born to children. I applaud the young mother for staying in school but something has to be done to help these young girls understand that choosing to have sex at such a young age can potentially change their lives in such a way that they may never be able to get out of poverty.

Bekind, I think that Lonsberry IS doing something about the issue of teenage pregnancy. He is shinning the light of the media on a flawed program designed to instill a false sense of reward for mediocre performance by young women that made poor choices. Would you choose the same path for your students or would you reward them for individual excellence? I'm sure you give all of yourself to your students and I'm glad there are people like you willing to devote a lifetime to the betterment of others. Solution to teenage pregnancy? Try this one. Have your minister single you and your family out in church. Then have your minister deliver a sermon about personal responsibility and the degree of shame you have brought on your family. No? Try this one. No aid to families with dependent children for anyone under 30. As a police officer, I saw MANY poor families that worked all hours of the day and night to better themselves and their families. They would be insulted by a handout but they would love to have you in their homes for coffee, which I was honored to do. If their teenage daughter came home pregnant, she would be SKINNED ALIVE. Enough said.

VERY WELL SAID. And as someone wrote already on here, "Where has the shame gone?" You used to be ashamed to be pregnant and unmarried. It was considered a sin and immoral.
Now it's glorified by some because she finished school? Big deal. She's going to cost the tax payers plenty, now. So where has that education gotten her? She's still stupid.

I was raised by a single parent as our father ran out on us. My mother was married to him though. She worked six days a week to take care of us kids. And she would never have considered a hand out. She never took anything from anyone. We didn't have much. But we had each other and we had her guidance. And none of us had a child out of wedlock either. She would have skinned us alive.
It's a way of life for some in our city. Get your self knocked up and apply for assistance.

I agree and I for one am sick to death of these irresponsible people and their hand outs too,
It's time to bring back personal responsibility for your own actions.

This is the problem, handouts. "Teach a man to fish you feed him for life. Give him a fish you feed him for a day."

If these folks paid attention in school, where they try to TEACH you things, they would succeed. But if they CHOOSE not to... Good ole Uncle Sam will take from the ones who do work and learn... and give it to the lazy asses who won't do for themselves.

Good point, wealth re-distribution is alive and well in New York state. Problem is, this state made a cottage industry out of catering to a small segment of our society that either can't or won't make their own way. Now we have to dump our tax money into bottomless programs that produce no results. We also have to pay for a workforce designed to support the non-producing program. Actually, sounds like a win/win to me! Give me a nice cushy local or state job with benefits so that I run around and tell these poor misfortunates it's not their fault and we'll take care of everything for you. I can even drop you off at the welfare office, it's on the way to my union hall.

It's simple: They have braindead parents (whose only concern is to become grandparents) egging them on. Abject poverty, too young to be a decent parent, few job choices... none of these matter to the parents who desperately want grandkids.

Hopefully someday, the younger generations will decide it's 'cooler' to be childfree and brag about radical hysterectomies and vasectomies as the ultimate declaration of adulthood and control of their lives.

Everybody has a 'right' to become a parent (or not); nobody has a 'right' to become a grandparent. Childless by choice is becoming a rapidly growing trend.

He tells it like it is-whether some people don't like it o not. Don't listen if you're thin skinned. Some people don't like to hear truths but that doesn't make them go away. Don't back down Bob (I know you won't).

From Lonsberry own site: He grew up in Canisteo, New York, lives in Mount Morris, New York, is a college dropout and was once a missionary on the Navajo and Hopi reservations in the American Southwest.

So a geek computer connection is an authority on county/nation/ world issues. HE'S A GEEK COLLEGE DROPOUT. ROTFL
