Should a grocery store be built in downtown Rochester?

No way. Look at the BS (BULL SH!T) Wegmans had to go thrue with the East ave store. Rochester and NY are not business friendly.
How long was the East ave Wegmans project in the making?
Wegmans future growth will be down south out of state. And smartly so.

There was already a Wegmans downtown in Midtown Plaza years ago. Danny got smart and took it out when business wasn't so good.

Attitudes like that is the reason why Rochester is so conservative. It's time to think big and get with the times. Unfortunately, what you posted, is probably what will remain.

Johnson gave Wegmans such a hard time, they closed Mt. Hope because of it. Midtown ended up being trashed. Too much thievery.

You are 100% correct. Rochester is lucky, very lucky Wegmans did not say screw it with the East ave store and pull out of the city all together.
I would love to know how many businesses watched Wegmans and the Genesee Brewery and said FCK the city of Rochester.

Really? I know plenty of people who have recently moved downtown into the new lofts, and beautiful apartments that are being built, that would love to have a grocery store that we could walk to, and be able to leave our car at home.

Read my post again, correctly this time. I didn't say that people downtown didn't want a grocery store, I said it has to be profitable for the store and to be able to sustain.

sure people will go, but like I just said. It has to be profitable for the company. Wegmans left for a reason when they were in Midtown. Between the shrinkage (theft) and the store not bringing enough money to cover operating costs, they made the decision to leave instead of lose money.

A lot of people don't want to go downtown because they don't feel safe and the police can't be there 24 hours a day to arrest shoplifters and escort people to their cars and homes.

There was another grocery store in midtown after wegmans. It met the same fate. Pieces of trash stealing high ticket items. Who wants to be robbed other than morons with no business sense?

Call me crazy, but I believe downtown can be vibrant again. It has potential to be profitable. If you dont have a downtown, you dont have nothing. Egos from politicians are what's keeping downtown the way is. What killed Midtown Wegmans is what killed every tenant there, high rent and taxes, not shoplifters. I may be dreaming, but i wish downtown would make a comeback. I am an optimist.

Sure, why not? We need a strip of retail on Main Street again. Wegmans and Midtown market both wee very convenient for everyone, and that is what's missing from Downtown.

Downtown could be so much more but the problem is, no one is interested in it enough to put the money forward. Unless you are talking about a casino. The politicians missed the boat when they didn't capitalize on Brown's Race or the river. A lot of history there that people would come to see. Unless a grocery store was secure and safe to go to, I don't see it happening, good idea but doubtful.
