It is amazing how he got away with 1 desk top and 2 lap tops without being deteccted. He would have had to unhook them and all. I would think in this day and age, that a Federal Government installation would have better security than that. I bet if any of the government employees had had any information on those computers they would tried harder to find them.

This is the 2nd time this has happened to my better half. Once in Ohio's vet clinic (they got hacked or something and sent a letter saying "Sorry about that, watch your credit rating in the future." He got another from the INDY VA hospital too, ridiculous! Don't these people lock their offices when they aren't in them??
I mean if they were stolen by cleaning crews, after hours, I can almost see how it was hard to avoid but they HAVE security, they have cameras, and they have LOCKS. USE THEM!!!
I think most gov offices have cubicles. The boss is the one with the office.

All the millions of dollars spent on HIPAA compliance, all the lawyers and their staff that companies were forced to hire....all the BS compliance training sessions employees have to endure......and the Federal charges are dropped?? HIPAA is just a farce......a bone thrown to lawyers by Ted Kennedy, the king of the worthless.

The article doesn't say, but I know first hand that ALL VA laptops are now encrypted. There should also be NO patient info on the desktops, as they connect to records electronically on a secured server.

Let's not forget that this guy is a criminal. He stole the computers. No one from the VA was implicated in the theft. The other infamous laptop theft was also just that, a break and enter theft.

However, I would think that someone that looks like him with two computers under his arms would be noticed and questioned.
