Former preacher arrested for alleged exploitation of a minor

Don Burns, former preacher of Central Church of Christ in Sparta, was arrested March 5, 2013, on a one-count indictment of sexual exploitation of a minor.

After a five-month investigation into allegations that Burns had possession of images of child pornography, Sheriff Oddie Shoupe says,“Evidence was presented to a specially called grand jury by White County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Chris Isom.

“This was over a five-month investigation by my department, along with the help of Detective Carl Sells of the Cookeville City Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.”

The department alleges between Oct. 18 and 19, Burns possessed more than 100 images of child pornography on his computer.

On the morning of March 5, Burns was given the option to turn himself in to authorities or be picked up by officers. Burns chose to turn himself in to officials at White County Justice Center.

According to a press release issued by the office of District Attorney General Randy York, the charge of sexual exploitation of a minor is a class B felony and carries the penalty of an eight-year to 12-year mandatory prison sentence without parole.

Burns is being held on a $150,000 bond at the White County Jail, where, according to Chief Deputy Tommy Simmons, he will be segregated from regular jail population.

York’s office says they are unable to release any further information about the case at this time.

The sad thing is people who are supposed to represent God and Jesus and the Bible, then do things like this, give all other Christians a blemish. 1. Not everyone who claims to be a Christian is. "You shall know them by the fruits they bear" 2. Don't assimmilate all churches with this one individual. We are all human and do wrong things sometimes, but this is beyond wrong. This is not a Christian losing their cool over the Super Bowl. This is a sick sick sick person. 3. Don't judge by the actions of others. I can only answer for what I've done. Your neighbor might be a meth cook... that doesn't mean that you are.

funny thing is he will get the heat, just because he is a minister, when in reality, he is nothing but a mere man, like anyone else. Just because he is a minister does NOT make it a greater crime, ministers mess up too. They are not perfect, neither are you or I. What he did was absolutely wrong and he deserves time in jail, but just because he is a minister he will be run thru the mill, where any other low life can get on here and do it and it wont be talked about half as much...just saying

Ministers have a lot of power & authority especially in small communities. They are looked up to & our youth are expected to respect them. With that power comes expectations that they will be decent human beings. This crime against a child is one of the worst crimes in my opinion. Yes, I am sure this man will get several unkind comments, I am also sure some of the good people from his church will say the kids ask for this abuse which is bs. No kid ask for or deserves this. Like it or not ministers, teachers, & police officers are held to a higher morals than the average person. Our children have a higher exposure to these people & those professions have a lot of power over our children.

Ministers are held to a higher standard by God and by man. There are rules given in the new testament as to whocan be a minister. Of course there are rules for all of us. They are called commandments.

Something that strikes me as weird about this case acording to the op post. Usually in cases like these the defendant is charged with more then one count. The police let the defendant pretty much hang thenselves because it is a hard crime to prove. One could say it was an accident or someone esle downloaded the material. The report says there was a 5 month investigation and yet only one charge ? That means it was a one-time event. If it were 100 photos downloaded one at a time that would mean 100 counts of the crime. People who are involved in this kinda crime are involved more then once. It is a lifestyle with those involved.

It will be interesting to see the end result of this investigation.

the photos were viewed in October. When you view something on the internet a temp file is created. Unless you're a professional you won't know how to really wipe your hard drive. It gives a specific date for when the photos were viewed which means it was a set up site designed to catch would be pedophiles. I'm not excusing what he did, if it was him and not someone else in his household, but entrapment is still illegal. Except it would seem for internet crimes. Exploitation is not looking at child porn. It is obtaining pornographic photos of a child and sharing those photos with others. I personally hate what these sick, twisted people do. If castration would stop their crazy I'd be all for it,but they've found that the gratification is a mental aspect not a physical one. This trial will most likely moved to another venue, atleast it will if his lawyer has any sense. Parents take heed. You don't know the sickness in the minds of people. Stop posting photos of your naked children on the internet. You think it's cute, pedophiles do too. A photographer once pushed for me to have a photo of my child in the typical cute naked baby in a metal tub picture done. I fired them onsight. Respect your child's right not to have strangers looking at them.

If you cant trust you "minister" who can you trust. We are not talking about gossiping, coveting, or adultery. We are talking about something an adult minister did that involved exploitation of a child. That is not something that can be written off as everyone messes up. Sorry if you think that but you are WRONG.
