Anyone got any thoughts on FBC? I have visited a few times but not really sure what to think. The music was loud and seemingly very off beat. Someone told me that the music minister can't read music. How is that possible? the preacher was so-so but i couldn't get past his hair. I have heard they have a good youth program which would be good for the kids.

only you can decide...you've visited and have thoughts about it. everyone has their own spin on things. it has to be a place your whole family can feel comfortable and welcome to participate in worship. don't give up, there's a church out there somewhere for your family.

Try Gum Springs, their preacher is awesome - speaks the word with life application, and they have very good programs for youth, children, seniors, all age groups really. It may not be the place for you, but it is worth a try.

I have several friends that go to FBC and is a good church that teaches the Bible. What you need is a good pastor to be over the church and your family. Pray and God will send you where He wants you to be.

I'm not on here to bash someone. I just want to know what's wrong with the man's hair? I find it humorous!

I've never been to this church and don't think that I know anyone from there. You said that someone told you that the music minister couldn't read music and how is that possible. It is possible. I can't read music but I can play several instruments like there's no tomorrow. Being musically inclined though makes all the difference in the world. It bothers me when music is off beat but the Bible says to make a joyful noise, so give it a chance. Don't make decisions about church based on what other people say. Decide for yourself based on your own experiences. See...you already have a negative thought in your mind about the music minister, all based on what someone else was murmuring about. Other people running their mouths can cause you to form an opinion about someone before you've even met them personally.
About the preachers hair. I've never seen him, so I can't visualize, but I think that it's somewhat humorous because I know what you're talking about. I've seen people with "the hair" that's hard to overlook or get over but the Bible teaches us to not be critical in our way of thinking concerning things like this. Surely you wouldn't let a man's hairstyle keep you from receiving the Holy and Living Word of God. Don't let small, petty things stand in your way. Alot of churches have problems and some of them even split up and divide over the "Christians" complaining and murmuring about stupid, petty things like what color the carpet should be. Like I said, form your own opinion based on your own experiences and pray about it. It's entirely between you, your spirit man, and God.
Good Luck

Ditto on the guy at Gum Springs...He's about as good as I've found around here. He really has his head on straight, heart in the right place, and rightly divides the Word.

Another couple of really GREAT churches would be The River in Cookeville, and Cookeville First Assembly in Algood with Pastor Bobby Davis. He's the best in the area in my opinion. I've been to a bunch of them, but I download and listen to his podcast as often as I can...he's VERY VERY good!!!

I agree with Hillbilly Green that it is possible to be a great musician and not be able to read music. In this case since the music guy doesn't play any instruments (very strange). I tend to think schrute is right in that it is just a very odd situation that plays it's self out in how the service flows.

The times i've been there i noticed the hair thing too by the way. His hair is really long on one side, and covers one eye. He spends a great deal of time flipping it out of his face. I tried not to get caught up with it, but it was impossible not too.

My experience with 1st Baptist is their greatest asset is their members. There are lots of great people there that love the Lord. It is just a tad disappointing that two of their most visible members distract from the whole, and from the churches main goal. To lead people to Christ.

May I please clear up a misconception? As someone who attends FBC of Sparta and is active in our music ministry, I can tell you that our minister of music, Ken Bingemer, definitely does read music. He received his music degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He also plays piano and has a keyboard in his office.

We love our pastor, Dr. J.D. Davis, and the gentle way he leads our congregation. His love for the Lord and respect for His Word is obvious to anyone who knows him. Before now, I have not heard of anyone being distracted by his hair. I hope you can overlook the things you find distracting next time you visit and come expecting a blessing from the Lord.
