Consolidation may be in the future for the police departments in Highland Heights and Southgate.
Since April, the chiefs of the departments and city officials have been discussing a possible merger of the two, said Highland Heights Police Chief Carl Mullen.
"We are looking at ways to provide more efficient service, while decreasing our increasing expenses," Mullen said.
Currently, an independent study is being conducted to see if the consolidation would be beneficial to the departments and cities.
"We are really just in the beginning of this so we are still waiting for more information," said Southgate Police Chief Mike Hall. "I believe (the consolidation) would be a good thing."
Southgate currently has a seven-man police department, which makes scheduling hard when someone is sick or at training, Hall said.
"Consolidating would give us more people to pull from and would make it a lot easier to cover shifts," Hall said.
Hall and Mullen said there is currently no plans to lay off any of either departments' personnel.
Southgate Mayor Jim Hamberg the cities are hoping to have information from the independent study back in June.
If the study shows that they should move forward with the consolidation, a public meeting will be held at a later date, Hamberg said.

Why can't they talk about merging the Fire Department now, instead of costing tax payers more money. This is great leadership by The City Of Southgate. Charge me more so someone else can put their name on a building. GREAT JUST GREAT!

Oh Boy Southgate city Council is at it again! They want to merge our Police Department but not look at merging the Fire Department?????? This just proves the type of Councilmen we have here. This is a joke. Before they try to make us pay higher taxes shouldn't they look into merging all our Departments. If it don't work then ask us for money. Mayor I beg you to get your balls out of your wife's purse. And for the Council get your egos in check. You were voted in to do for the citizens not do for yourself. The Fire Department should be turned over to someone who really knows how to run one. Like Ft. Thomas or Newport, or Central Campbell. If our Police merge with Highland Heights then our Fire Department should be able to merge also. Get a clue! VOTE NO FOR THIS FIRE DEPARTMENT! Then we might get the point across we sent last time. Council pay attention to your voters!
