Mayor's son tangled up in hiring-site issue

Full story: Newsday

The teenage son of Southampton Mayor Mark Epley seems an unlikely candidate to become embroiled in the now-raging debate over illegal immigration that appears to have reached a turning point on the East End.

This whole thing could have been avoided if Mayor Epley would have used better judgement. We all know that hiring sites just condone and encourage illegal behavior and allow certain folks to by-pass the law and avoid paying their share of the taxes.

These folks are taking jobs and money out of the protesters pockets and the tension is running high on this issue all across the country,.

People as far away as Connecticut and NYC come out to protest with the folks in Southampton as well as folks from Nassau and Suffolk County.

If the police would have been doing their job, this incident would not have happened. They were on the scene during the protest and let the situation get out of control before they stepped in.

Tempers flare sometimes at protests and words are exchanged in many instances but when it become physical, that is where the line should be drawn. Mayor Epley's son should have used better judgement when he stepped off of his property and into the street and confronted the protester, especially since he has the whole incident on tape.

I hope everyone learns a lesson from this and that Mayor Epley pulls in his horns and acts in a manner becoming a person of authority. He has threated the protesters in the past if they came to his home. It would be best if he put his personal anomosity toward the protesters aside, as he is the one who caused this whole incident, and worked with the protesters to make sure this does not happen again.

Although the mayor's son is just standing up for his father, he should have been told to stay out of the fray. He has come to the hiring site to confront the protesters in the past.

Regardless of what you think, grown adults shouldn't be verbally harassing kids. The kid has nothing to do with it, the MinuteMan, Ron Lewandoski, sure wouldn't like it if someone were harassing his children over this issue!! It's one thing to formally object to a mayors plan (in the appropriate place), it's another to harass him and his family at his private residence.

I agree with the above poster. I ABHOR illegal immigration. But protesting the mayor's private residence is wrong. There is a time and place for protests. And its NEVER at the person's private home.

An 18-year-old isn't a child... and even if someone's in his face, he should still know better than to get physical.

Leave the Kids Alone did not see the tape nor were you there. So until then do not condemn for which you do not know what you are condemning.
Jnop people like you do not get it. The mayor is giving these low life-blood sucking-tax draining-illegal aliens and the businesses that wrongfully employ them, a platform to not only illegally work but also freedom to voice their needs. So who do you think the elected official,(The Mayor) is representing in Southampton; obviously not the legal people that put him in office? The Mayor and his son must be held accountable for their decisions and actions.

Take an 18 year old male and bring the minute men to his house to harass his family, see what he does!! Also, it's not even about the kid, protesting outside someones private residence is asking for an altercation! What would you have done?

If this jerk off Russell had shoved a camera into my face in front of my own home I wouldn't have shoved him - I would have shoved the camera up his blow hole. If he wants to protest an otherwise valid point (illegals) do it at village hall - not at someone's home. That's just plain rude and inconsiderate for eveyone in the neighborhood.

Okay, so how would you like it if your mayor decided to put an "Illegal Alien Hiring Site" next door to you? Not so nice any longer? The people are done with taking the passive route, we tried it for to long time and it has incurred upon us almost 20 million people illegally in this country. Not to mention our low life elected officials pandering to the “Latino Special Interests Groups” and not the people that have put them in office. Do you think it was right for people illegally in this country to march on our streets? Send all of the Illegal Aliens to mexico and let the mexican government sort them out.

My comment has nothing to do with how I feel about illegal people, it specifically states that they should take their practices to an appropriate place, not a private residence to harass the whole family. I don't believe we should be making hiring places for illegal workers, but it has nothing to do with the family!! How ignorant are you for believing the son should be held accountable for his fathers political decisions! The son never ran for mayor, nor did he make decisions regarding the places to hire these people. I don't have to see the video to condemn the actions of people who were protesting at a private house, it was writen in the article that the protesters were at the house, what video evidence do I need? It sounds to me like it was an instigation not a protest!! You are an Idiot!

Harassing the mayor's family was begging for an incident. I don't support illegal immigration, or those who employ them, bit provoking the family is not "cricket".

Hiring centers are controversial, but until the Federal govt is willing to do something the centers, at least, get the day worker problem off the street. Local govt cannot deport illegals and ICE rarely cares unless other very serious charges are pending. I don't have an answer that will work any time soon, but provoking teenagers is certainly no answer.

I agree with the protesters that the problem must be addressed, but I think that protesting at the mayor's home is not to their cause.

I agree with you that the illegals should be deported, and I agree that hiring sites should not be in residential neighborhoods, but provoking an incident at the mayor's house is not right either. It is also the type of thing that will end up being counterproductive as many who would otherwise support your position will be turned off.

Hiring sites, properly place, at least reduce the milling around on major roads and the traffic problems, among other things, that result from a problem that local govt can not solve.

The son came down to the protest site near 7/11 and started yelling at the protesters on a few occasions. He gave as good as he got! He is not an innocent bystander. The mayor also threatened to do something to the protesters if they protest his home. It was even mentioned in the papers.

The mayor is not doing his job and the protesters have every right to call him on it and if it takes protesting his home, so be it. He is not above the law. This would never have happened if the son just went inside and it would never have happened if the police would have intervened before it got so far along. It would not have happened if the mayor just did not go ahead against the wishes of the folks in Southampton and decided to take it upon himself to create a hiring area which is against the law. The mayor is a bully and a thug and not sophisticated ehough to handle this volatile situation.

I am not surprised the mayor had a law passed just for his benefit. He was more than willing to subject his constituents to the crowds and noise and illegal activity at a local park by their homes. But when people try to gather near his home, he doesn't like it!!
Now you know how those of us who live close to these hiring sites feel!! We are afraid for our safety as well as quality of life. Why after years of being subjected to this daily gathering by our homes has nothing been done by our politicians.
It is only when they too have to live with large groups of people gathering in front of THEIR homes that they act.
I hope all who vote remember what the town did for the benefit of their own and wouldn't do for the rest of the people who called for help for years about people gathering to wait for illegal work by their homes.

Whatever your feelings....if they have a problem with Mayor Epley, then they should protest at village hall...not at his home.
