I think if some of these people, including these country singers, never the true facts about coal and coal mining as a job, they would feel differently. These people that are so against coal have probably never seen a mine or knew anyone that has worked in one. It's sad, but I think these big shots, that are against coal, are getting these higher up people so side with them, with out even knowing the facts. It would be great if everyone would just stop and hear both sides. I hope and pray this eventually happens. If not, well, that is a scary thing to think about for us here in Harlan and other mining communities. Maybe I'm wrong, if mining stops, our homes and properties would depreciate drastically. Whose to say these country singers and other people wouldn't buy up our homes, run us out of here and make this a big getaway for people like themselves. People already come from all over to vacation here, four wheelers and such. Imagine what these rich and wealthy people could do here. I remember when they had that four wheeler parade, some even came from Japan. And if you think about it, Nashville isn't that far from here. Shoot Obama might even vacation here. I know this sounds rediculous and maybe it's just the worry talking, but this is a scary thing going on. I never thought I'd see the day this would be happening. Guys this is just my opinion. I hope and pray this works out and we can get on with our lives here. The way we always have. For many generations.

The reason for CANCER you RETARD is because of National Coil Company at Dayhoit who spilled many chemicals in the Cumberland River. When they done this, the chemical got in people water wells and soil. Before you write again about Harlan county do your research and then you can voice you opinion.
The chemicals used to clean the engines being repaired for the coal industry is where the pollution come from, your the retard! It costed five hundred dollarsa barrel to get rid of, so they dumped it for free! I had an uncle that drove one of the trucks, they would go to a quite dead end and dump the barrels. They poisoned us out of GREED! END MTR, save the mounbtains and you'll save your grand babies health. Your letting them take the only thing we have that is worth anything, the beauty we are surrounded by and our health, neither can be replaced or bought back when it's gone. The mountains just like our health is PRICELESS. Your just flat out greedy and ignorant if you support mountain top removal.

look at it from every aspect...coal, in a way, is holding us back...i'm not saying its the main reason...i'm saying its one of the elements as to why we have nothing else...
Your exactly RIGHT and when they have taken all the coal what are we going to do then?? What are we going to do then? The mountains will be gone, there will be no clean water,no job's, what then? What the he!! are we going to do when the COAL IS GONE? Let's pretend it is and leave the mountains alone, they will generate money for a smarter future. If you take them now your stealing your children's birth right's. You won't even have a clean glass of water to offer them. Like a drug addict, stealing from your kid's piggy banks. Greed is what is taking the mountain's from us. GREED, the root of all EVIL. The almighty sickening dollar. THE MOUNTAINS ARE PRICELESS. In am the cryin indian too, so none of you smataszes start acting like investigators trying to out me. Don't waste your time. I have my reasons.

Give me some of your ideas on how these Mtn.s are gonna generate money for Harlan County. In my opinion a lot of our Mtns. are too steep to do anything with right now. You cant build on them, and most dont even make good habitats for large animals like elk, deer, and bear.
With some of this MTD (Mountain Top Development) we are able to turn this into usable land which otherwise would have been useless. We cant have any large infrastructure come in here like an amusement park or anything because there really is no place to build. I

Dont get me wrong I would oppose MTD in some cases, for instances Big Blk. Mtn. because that is the highest peak in Ky.. but some MTD is a good thing. You need to check out all sides of the stories instead of looking at one.

It don't matter what was cleaned there after they cleaned them they was the one at fault not Coal companies for dumping the waste. Also the clean water they preach about it ummm coal severance monies have put city water throughout Eastern Kentucky. It is your fault and your fault only if you have well water. Yet, over 90 % of Harlan County citzens has city water available to their homes. Also it is the druggies who destory our streams when they throw used needles where they shot up. Therefore, Have you yourself been on any of the strip mines? To see that there is mountains and trees are not gone? Jump on the band wagon and point fingers but really you have no Idea on mining. I know my facts because my family has been in coal mining for years.

I totally agree. At least you make since in what you are saying. we don't have to agree, & i don't! Actually my husband & I both agree. He has been in the coal mines for 35 yrs. & still going. He has the same attitude you do. National Strike, might just be the answer to show everyone just what coal does for EVERYONE!!

People just don't understand what the coal industry does for our county, state and country. Coal is our livelihood and feeds our families. They have the right to their opinion; I just don't have to agree with it. If they depended on coal mining to take care of their families they would SING a different tune.
These wealthy singers want to save the mountains and hurt the precious people that make a living from coal. They need to stop and think that these same people helped make their careers.
So maybe we should just pour concrete after we strip mine instead of planting trees and sowing grass, seems to work in the big cities. These cities have covered miles and miles and miles of land with concrete, we snip the top off of a mountain and here come the activists. What a joke!
Why don't they look closer to home at what is being done to their environment-Developers destroying pristine forest with more and more homes on hill sides surrounding the Great Smokey Mts National Park. The huge homes the stars build that gobble up energy. They have lots of issues to stand for in their own backyard. They should get out of ours.
I've said it time and time again..." For the first time in history the Coal Operators and the Coal Miners need to go on a National STRIKE." Let the coal piles at the Electric Plants go down, let them run out. Then watch all these Tree Huggers and Country Music Singers go without electric, let their heated pools go cold, their million Dollar Homes freeze. No TV, or refrigerators to keep there beer and food cold, turn their lights and computers off, and let them try to pump a gallon of gas for their limo's! Do it now before they put you out of work forever...Going on a National Strike is the is the only way to settle this and make everyone against coal... see the light!

Solar and wind power have made impressive strides recently, but coal plants show no signs of disappearing.
That could be a problem for power companies, especially once the EPA's proposed greenhouse gas regulations go into effect.
Now NRG Energy, a wholesale power generation company headquartered in Texas, wants to experiment with replacing coal with switchgrass and sorghum at a Louisiana plant.

NRG claims that its switchgrass plan is almost carbon neutral because carbon emitted by the grass is absorbed by the atmosphere during the growing season. According to the FDA, one acre of switchgrass can hold up to five tons of CO2-equivalent underground each year.

The pilot project will start out small, with NRG planting switchgrass on 20 acres of land. NRG will measure how many tons of grass per acre are produced, and the biomass will be used as a partial fuel for electrical generation by 2010. If all goes well, the power company will expand the switchgrass project to other coal plants.

Switchgrass may be new to coal plants, but the crop has been studied as a cellulosic ethanol source for vehicles since 2007 by organizations such as Ceres Inc. and Argonne National Laboratory. There are still some kinks to work out--switchgrass-derived energy requires the same massive amount of water as crude oil production--but overall, the crop is a promising alternative to space-hogging first-generation biofuels.

Do you think that this grass is any good for the enviroment?

I want to go green but it will hurt the coalminers and families.
