Can someone please tell me why it is necessary to blow the fire whistle 3 times? The fireman have pagers and are paged before the whistle even goes off. I applaud our fireman and the jobs that they do. I think once is more than enough. Anyone else feel the same? And if so, what can been done to change this?

im proud of the firemen, but they need that damn siren about like they need another hole in the head, it goes off so much if we had a community wide emergency, no one would pay any attention to it. they have radio's.

Well if u lived close to the fire station and had to hear the damn thing u may think it is annoying as hell also. It has gotten louder the past few years and I agree that something needs to be done about it at least turn the volume down on it.

I grew up right behind the fire station and my dad was a fireman until he passed away. That fire siren has saved many lives so please find something else to complain about.

that siren is nothing but noise pollution, and they dont need to run it for 5 min. they all already know when there is a fire, and the rest of whos house isnt on fire dont need to hear it. we have small babies and it wakes them up, never fails we get them to sleep for a nap, or for bedtime, and bam stupid loud siren blaring, then every dog in the neighborhood starts haowling. that siren should not be there, someone Please start patition, i know lots of ppl who would sign it.

I am not bashing the fireman, by any means. I just think the whistle is a little much. Back in the day they did not have pagers. They do now. Therefore, I feel that the siren going off for 3 times, everytime, is a bit much. The general public does not need to know about every house fire or car wreck. Just like yuk said, there are babies sleeping, and for that matter, there are grown men and women, that work night shifts, that are also trying to sleep through the day.

Yes the siren is loud and it's supposed to be.True it can be annoying and agrivating, but I'll bet that for all the ones who have griped about so far would be saying something totally different if it was your house on fire,God forbid that it would ever happen. But no one knows when that could very easily happen. Also the pagers they have doesn't mean that they are on constantly and all the firemen don't live close to the station. So there's alot more to take into consideration in this matter. It's a safety factor for the town, that's why it's there and what it's for.

The alarm is not just sounded to notify of fires. It is also used to notify the community of other things. Like accidents, weather(tornados) and chemical spills. I know that it can be very annoying but it could also save lives. I can't remember the number of times that it sounds for each notification but when I lived in South Shore near the fire department I took heed to the number of times so I would know what was going on. Just in case we needed to take cover. Also like the one post there is very poor reception in certain areas with the radios. With the magnitude of the sound of the alarm firefighters, medics and the community have a greater chance of hearing that when maybe they could not hear their radios. It is very very annoying hearing that sound but if it could save one person then it has done it's job. I actually wish that my community had an alarm system. We have a volunteer fire dept. but know alarm.

I asked about this very thing. It drives me nuts, too. LOL But the fireman I asked said it was a state law. He said that it was either every day at noon or every day at nine pm. I'm good with noon! LOL I also think that different emergencies have diff tones. Like, a fire has a certain tone and a car wreck has another. I'm not sure about that, though. It is extremely loud and annoying but I understand why they have it.

Think of it this way, what if in the middle of the night a train derailed and toxic chemicals or gases were leaking and the town had to be evacuated. Or if a barge hit the bridge and ruptured and was leaking chemicals or gases. The barge isn't going to stop instantly and would travel up river close to town. The piolt would have to put it into the bank to stop it and to keep it from drifting back down river. The siren would go off. If severe weather such as a tornado warning went into effect the siren would go off. The siren is their for our own protection in any event that might happen for our own safety and for the town. Like it or not it should be appreciated for the simple fact that we are fortunate to have the system here. Alot of places still don't have the pleasure of an alarm system which puts other peoples lives more at risk than ours.

what a bunch of crap, yea if they only used it for very rare emergency type situations that would be fine, but they dont. they use it every time someone takes a dump.

Wow what a wonderful attitude you have there about communuity safety. Ok lets say that they did away with it and God forbid your house caught on fire in the night. Who would you call? How would you get any help and save your home? Where would you be then? Out in the cold and helpless. Bet you'd have a different attitude then about the siren. You'd be the first one there at the town meeting griping and complaining to have one then. Nothing is perfect and everyone isn't going to be satisfied no matter what is done. Someone is always going to complain about things, but too many people take things for granted and never consider others until it happens to themselves. Then all of a sudden they have a different attitude towards things and appreciate it.
