A proposal on the November 3rd ballot to lower Maine’s excise tax on motor vehicles should be rethought to make the tax cut less severe and more comprehensive so all Mainers can benefit from a tax decrease that keeps needed local spending intact at greater levels for items like road maintenance and puts extra money in the hands of all Mainers at a tax cut that is flat and universal for all aged vehicles; for example one could cut the tax rate for each aged vehicle category by a small amount like one mill.
