The School district is talking about not replacing retiring teachers, laying off teachers and aides, and lately, they have even been turning the lights off in the halls at the high school to save money! The school board wants to entertain the idea of bringing Mr. Cook back at a reduced salary--- but keep the two assistant superintendents? Does anyone realize that one assistant superintendent salary will pay approximately 4 aides yearly salaries? The schools have to pass those state tests, and our kids are going to suffer with less teachers, aides, and more kids in their classes! Not to mention, now we don't have all the lights turned on??? What a great idea, lets lower the lighting on a bunch of hormonal teenagers. What monkey came up with that idea??? I bet we are the only school around that doesn't value our kids enough to keep the lights on. What about the cost to operate that School Board Office? I heard it costs the district $10,000 a MONTH to operate that place--- and it's only offices to a handful of people! By the way, one of the Assistant Supt.'s has a secretary! What's that all about? I think the school board needs to start making decisions in the best interest of the students.
Everyone should plan on going to the next board meeting and making sure are kids are taken care of!

This topic really is sad and I wont be popular for what I'm about to say. We wanted new schools, we voted for it now we can't afford them. It's like buying a new home, you love it, it's really beyond your budget, but you buy it then can't afford the upkeep and expenses. How's the school board deal with it? They lay people off or raise taxes or both. As a tax payer I would like to see the written proof that this school district is as broke as they say. Or is it just a ploy because it's contract season? Come on South Point Board members, Show us the money!!!

Bull! if we would have consolidated elementary schools we would have extra money...But Burlington has to throw a fit over that!! and I heard that the governor is supposed to go to one super intendent in the county.. You know we are the only district in the county that has a asst super intendent..let alone.. two... South Point is and has always been wasteful with their money.. and I agree..it should be about the kids welfare not money or power.

definately agree with Geez. I think the consolidation would have been better but we didn't end up with that. And has anyone else noticed that the kids that go to Burlington now are the ones that do not live right in South Point but on the county roads.. Are country kids not good enough to go to South Point?

I live "technically" in the village. I pay city taxes and city utilities but we are shipped to Burlington.. I hate that we can choose to go to a school in a different district but we can't choose the school we want to go to in our OWN district.

I think it's horrible that we can not choose where to send our children. I did not like having to make my child switch schools after just beginning. She had gotten close with some of the other kids and of course wouldn't you know they were some of the ones that didn't have to transfer. Granted she is in the 2nd grade now but she was coming out of kindergarden when she had to change and she just couldn't understand why she couldn't go to school with her friends anymore. Sad but we got her through the change and she has adjusted well but i still feel sorry for the kids having to make the changes. Wish things would have been left alone. Oh well nothing we can do to change it now.

yet we have the money to pay a superintendant and for him to have two assistants. and now he wants to retire and be rehired! s.p. is the only school district to have three people and to pay them a total of over 250,000 a year. they have money its is just being wasted!

He doesn't get paid double. He retires and gets his retirement which he paid into. Still works at same or less pay than before. Get your facts straight.. he isn't getting (2) pay checks from the school board.

Ok.. here is some facts. No, he is not getting paid 2 paychecks, HOWEVER... that's not the whole story. We have 2 assistant superintendents. If the school board would have chose to NOT rehire him, then they could have placed one of those two into that position and cut out an entire position (which btw is what is going to happen after Mr. Cook really does retire)He makes a lot of money- equivalent to 2-3 teacher salaries. But, he was rehired and they are NOT going to rehire some teacher positions. We are losing teachers due to retirement and they are not all going to be replaced. This creates large numbers of students in classrooms and that is a hurtful situation in a classroom setting. ALSO, with all the cuts, teachers just found out that they so not get a supply order this year. That means that pretty much the only thing they get is writing paper. Every other thing these teachers and students need will have to be paid for out of the teacher's own paycheck. And, with salaries that are not large to start with, this is going to be a struggle for them. Think about how many pencils, construction paper, etc. that these classrooms go through every year. Especially the upper grades that have 3 or 4 different classes a day. It's going to be a huge struggle for the teachers. For the board to make a choice to rehire a postition that makes up 2-3 teacher salaries, when they could have moved one of the assistant superintendents to that position, is just not right. We need to put the children first. But, that is definitely not happeneing here. This is an injustice to our teachers, our students, and the parents who put their trust in the school system to provide the best education possible for their children.

What the bad thing is over here at the Southpoint Elementary we have at least 10 kid that go here but live in Ironton and the principal even knows about it so i suggest every child that got moved last year to Burlington they need to come back to Southpoint Elm, the Board cant say a word as long as Ironton children are attending Southpoint
