Arctic permafrost is melting faster than predicted

Nov 29, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: New Scientist

We may be closer to a major climate tipping point than we knew. Earth's permafrost - frozen soil that covers nearly a quarter of the northern hemisphere and traps vast amounts of carbon - may be melting faster than thought and releasing more potent greenhouse gasses.

Here's some interesting info at the article's end:

Miller says that if the region gets warmer and drier, the microbes that thrive will be the type that produce CO2. But if it gets warmer and wetter, they will tend to produce more of the potent methane.

Arctic sea ice extent is 9,800,000 km2 (November 27, 2012)continuing & increasing losses greater than the size of New Jersey, despite present temperatures on Arctic Canadian islands, to as low as -35degC. with average temperatures above the 80th parallel continuing to rise sharply, this time to -16 degC! The sun has been unseen from the North Pole for 9+ weeks!

Arctic Ocean warmth is & will continue to keep Arctic sea ice thinner through the coming winter & even spring. As of November, Arctic sea ice VOLUME is ~21% lower than any other year Arctic sea ice yearly VOLUME. Average Arctic sea ice VOLUME during November for the period 1980-89, was ~18 thousand km3. Present November 2012 sea ice VOLUME is 6200 km3. The Arctic sea ice loss has been an uncontrolled plummet, desired by unscientific AGW deniers, who mostly have no or little mathematical or science background.

Presently, Arctic sea ice extent is at 9,927,031 km2 (November 28, 2012), yo-yoing upward by Mississippi-area size. Present temperatures on Arctic Canadian islands are as low as -43degC! Warmth pushed through Siberia, may have spilled into the area's strong heat above the 80th parallel.

The period of greatest average area Arctic sea icing increases per day(like Kansas-sized) is over.

Finally, the Arctic Ice Pack has attached solidly to the north coast of Alaska & now on the west coast. Baffin Bay is sea icing. Due to solar heats absorbed into the shallow waters of Hudson Bay, the Bay has resisted icing. However, Bay temperatures, now as low as -41 degC, due to cold spillage from the North Pole, finally cause strong icing on its north & west border.

The vast open Arctic waters north of Siberia have been covered by Arctic Ice Pack. The huge sea ice floes that strongly developed in the vast clear waters north of Siberia(due to broad double digit minus Siberian temps spilled from North Pole's 7+ weeks of darkness & vortex mixing breaking down stratified solar heated waters?), have done their job AND connected the Ice Pack to the entire Siberian coastline, truly a remarkable past development!

Chief Joseph Land was partially encircled by Arctic Ice Pack, very wide to the east, due to a continuing 5-day vortex, partially under the Ice Pack AND circling the islands that has moved cold Arctic sea water southward to the islands. The vortex quickly moved north completely under the Ice Pack, but has returned to the islands! Svalbard, in winter darkness 24/7, is still clear of the Ice Pack!!!!!!!!!!

A detail noted well over a month ago, is a raggy taggy developing edge along a part of the semi-circle Ice Pack, possibly NOT coincidental with the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS (plus?) OF SQUARE KILOMETERS, of waters north of Alaska & Siberia that are VASTLY CLEAR. Might the raggy taggy edge indicate huge turbulence & currents in this largest(ever?) ice free, & resulting southerly-directed heat stratified Arctic waters? I wonder if there might develop more raggy taggy edging, enough to form a swirl pattern?
A month+ ago, noted near the raggy taggy Ice Pack, developed 3 tiny pixel ice floes(arced?), separated from the Arctic ice pack toward southerly directions. A day later, the number of ice floes increased to 8 & indeed they formed an ARC. Pretty sure they represent a large scale vortex in open Arctic water!
Further data, showed that the vortex was true!

Downwelling solar heats, in unusual clear Arctic Ocean & seas, normally sea ice covered in decades past, which have strongly transported extra solar energy to continental shelf, sea & Ocean depths for 4 months, is over. The sun has been unseen from the North Pole for 9+ weeks & presently anywhere above the 69th parallel, now shrouding the Arctic with darkness for a good portion of the year! The sun is under 3 arcdeg above its farthest position to the south, due to the tilt of the Earth & present orbital position, with average temperatures above the 80th parallel jumping to -16 degC.

Published in the journal Science, the study was based on input from 47 experts at the 26 institutes that produced earlier studies with wild variations. "Some" estimated melt was raising sea levels by up to 2 millimeters a year, Shepherd noted, while a "few" said that overall polar ice was growing, and thus countering sea level rise.

Much of the discrepancy was due to data showing that Antarctica's vast eastern ice sheet was "adding, not losing ice".

Eastern Antarctica has indeed "added ice", but continent-wide the last decade shows a "50 percent increase in ice loss rate," said study co-author Erik Ivins, a satellite data expert with NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.

Well are we adding or not? Don't you love those expert scientist.

AGW is complex, but AGW will have its way. You love silly goose toxic topix AGW deniers AND don't love the complexities of science.

So we are back to the UN and thier brand of science again. After the fun we had with the IPCC I cannot help but wonder what fun we are going to have this time around. Noticed buried in the middle that they finally are admitting that their model's predictions are off. Of course I have been stating that those predictions have been off for year.

Permafrost is melting. I wonder how long before we can have that land producing something. I bet it would make great pastures and the grass that can now grow would take care of that CO2. Not to mention causing the grass to grow more lush and faster as well.

As opposed to NON-expert fast food fry cooks, grocery store cashiers and church janitors, who can, with a simple unsupported bald-faced assertion on an internet forum, destroy decades worth of scientific research and empirical evidence by THOUSANDS of expert scientists, technicians and students from around the world.

It must make them feel good knowing they are WAAAAAAY smarter than the scientists ... and it didn't require years worth of education, study, research, work, effort, thinking, etc..

Been telling them for years, that toxic topix AGW deniers sometimes never got hi skule deegreees(at least four in topix AGW forums). If they did, most did not get upper class science, chemistry, astronomy, physics, algebra or pre-calc. Of the few that got college degrees, very few got science & mathematics degrees.

Yeah, you can tell the truth here, anytime & all the time.

Ask a scientist how fry food, cashier a grocery store or clean a church. And you a non expert with a simple unsupported bald-face assertion on an internet forum destroy decades of hard work worth more than any scientific research that make change to their change. Hay expert go ask Einstein about errors made etc.

Actually, measurements of the area covered by the Arctic ice goes back far longer than the 1950's For example, Titantic collision was blamed on ignoring ice reports received. Of course the various explorers, seal and polar bear hunters, and a host of others who spent time in the Arctic also recorded the position of the edge of the ice. Many countries also sent warships to record position of the ice. Russia has records going back to the times of the Czars detailing Arctic ice coverage on a daily basis. After all, they wanted to exploit the riches of the area such as gold.
