This whole controversy is stupid, religion can not be proven or disproved. One can believe or not.

There is nothing in science that either disproves or proves the existence of god. Nevertheless, giving the age and size of the known universe, it is hard to believe that beings as superior to us as we are to ants do not exist. When the unknown is included, including the real possibility of a vast multitude of universes outside our own, finite, 14 billion light year existence, it is very difficult to conclude that humans and their behavior are the principle focus of any god or gods concern. Nevertheless, the vast majority of humans subscribe to precisely that idea and find much comfort in it.

I began to read the book last night and after the first few chapters decided to put it down, not because I don't understand it but rather because the writers seem to have no cooking clue what they are writing about beyond physics. In the first chapter they proclaim that philosophy is dead and that people now look to physics to answer all their questions about existence. I do look to physics to answer SOME questions, but dialectic logic (metaphysics) is above physics since it guides us to interpret the answers physics give us. The authors are very smart as far as it concerns physics -- although they do not really introduce any sort of new, groundbreaking discoveries in physics (m-theory is more than 20 years old and has been severly criticised due the fact that it is untestable and has no predictive value)-- but the writers are clearly deficient as philosophers. It thus comes as no suprise that they should proclaim philosophy dead. In their book, it certainly is. As a psychologist, I can assure you that dualism and idealism is certainly more pragmatic than materialism in my field of study. Would the authors of "The Grand Design" dare to say that psychology is a pseudo-science? This book is an insult to any thinking person.

In "The Grand Design" Stephen Hawking postulates that the M-theory may be the Holy Grail of physics...the Grand Unified Theory which Einstein had tried to formulate and later abandoned. It expands on quantum mechanics and string theories.

In my e-book on comparative mysticism at www.suprarational.com is a quote by Albert Einstein:“…most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science. To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and most radiant beauty – which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their primitive form – this knowledge, this feeling, is at the center of all religion.”

E=mc², Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, is probably the best known scientific equation. I revised it to help better understand the relationship between divine Essence (Spirit), matter (mass/energy: visible/dark) and consciousness (f(x) raised to its greatest power). Unlike the speed of light, which is a constant, there are no exact measurements for consciousness. In this hypothetical formula, basic consciousness may be of insects, to the second power of animals and to the third power the rational mind of humans. The fourth power is suprarational consciousness of mystics, when they intuit the divine essence in perceived matter. This was a convenient analogy, but there cannot be a divine formula.

So science, a human field of study, has to prove the existence of God? I don't think so

PhoeneiXRizing,

Which God did you have in mind? I hope not an anthropomorphic one. That is passé, although many children believe in it.

You are not an adherent The Kel?

That explains a lot. That explains how you are capable of the cruelty you inflict on other commentators.

You have no belief in God

The nastiness you put out on these Pasadena Star News threads The Kel, under dozens of assumed names, is intolerable. People's memorial services, the schools, the works, you are all over them

Who are you to condemn anybody else?

What gives you the entitlement to bully?

You should put a stop to it, assuming you know who you are talking to.

I should put a stop to saying God exists? To saying your lack of belief in God is a very interesting component in knowing the amount of bullying you are capable of The Kel?

The bullying you perform daily on these Pasadena threads and others you would not be capable of if you believed in God. This is why, Cal Tech community, while I applaud your deep thinking, I ask you to take the ethical behavior of human beings into consideration when examining religion

And no, I will not stop speaking out The Kel you cannot take away my right to speak my mind

Very late in correcting myself. I should have said "which concept (sic) of God did you have in mind" because people do differ in their mental constructs.
