Montebello has three water suppliers however the infrastructure is inadequate, obsolescent and unsafe for all of them.
There are no standby generation for the water pumps in case of emergency, earthquake, fire, power outage.
There is inadequate water storage.
The current water tanks are not earthquake resistant and do not have flexible connections allowing easy breakage and water loss in an earthquake as happened in Topanga in the Northridge quake- recall the pictures of fresh water flooding the streets.
There is not enough capacity to support the now mandated residential fire sprinklers.
The water mains are too small for current fire hydrant standards.
Many of the water mains are old, brittle, non ductile cast iron or transite cement/ asbestos.
The are most likely to fail when needed most.
The City has no rules disallowing projects with no reliable gravity fed water supplies, and inadequate fire mains for more than one fire at a time.
Time for a long term plan to rebuild.
