Reagan's Daughter Says He'd Have Backed Gay Marriage

Apr 4, 2013 | Posted by: Gay And Proud | Full story: www.nytimes.com

WASHINGTON — As Republican politicians wrestle with same-sex marriage, the daughter of a party icon — former President Ronald Reagan — said in an interview this week that she believes her father would have “been puzzled” by the political fuss and would have supported marriage for gay people.

I think Little Ronnie is correct. The former President knew better. But he was indifferent.

UNTRUE !

Ronald Reagan publicly fought AGAINST the "Briggs Initiative", i.e. "California Proposition 6" which "would have banned gays and lesbians, and possibly anyone who supported gay rights, from working in California's public schools."

I remember Ronald Reagan oublicly speaking against it in 1978, the year before I came out.

Furthermore, he had many gay and lesbian friends in Hollywood, including his wife's godmother, Hollywood actress Alla Nazimova.

You and your cohorts have a nasty habit of labelling ALL Republicans and conservatives (and probably Libertarians as well) as homophobic, as a kneejerk reaction, without any inquiries into their real positions and public statements at all.

Yo seem to think that gay people & equal rights AND Republicans are mutually exclusive, when that is not true. Furthermore, you ignore and apologize for teh homophobes in your own socialist party.

You know what we call that, DONT CHA ?!:)

And this absurd rant coming from the guy who blames Obama and the Democrats for taking so long to repeal DADT and for failing to repeal DOMA. Yeah, we're taking your criticism real seriously.

He might have, but he was married to a woman who was a homophobic bitch, even though she hung with gay men on a regular basis.

In the article Patti Davis talks about two "aunts" (actually unrelated friends of the family) who were clearly a lesbian couple who were asked to babysit the Reagan kids in their home. The "aunts" were even asked to live in the home to babysit the kids for an extended period of time while the adult Reagans went on a trip to Hawaii. And the "aunts" were given the Reagan marriage bed to sleep in while looking after the kids.

Doesn't sound like something that homophobes would do.

Funny how you and Reagan's daughter forget the facts. Reagan opposed Prop 6 (when he was no longer governor) only because he saw it as a violation of privacy, NOT because he was in favor of gay rights. When he ran for president in 1980 he made his view clear:

"My criticism is that [the gay movement] isn’t just asking for civil rights; it’s asking for recognition and acceptance of an alternative lifestyle which I do not believe society can condone, nor can I."

And because it was seen as a gay disease, that SOB never even uttered the word AIDS until 1987. Thousands died while that bastard did nothing. So let's not be so quick with the praise.

That's why I say the Reagans knew better. But he was still indifferent in office.

Please cite all the gay-positive legislation and/or executive orders initiated during the Reagan years.

I am definitely not a member of the "Saint Ronnie" brigade. I didn't think he was a good politician and didn't think he was a good actor.

While he is dead now and can't speak for himself I do think that it's important that the anti-gay crowd understand that if he were alive today it's unlikely he would have supported their overtly bigoted cause.

As he did so often, Reagan would probably have provided some lip-service to the party base and then concentrated on other issues. He was quite practical that way. I do not believe he would have visibly opposed DOMA.

Would three decades make a difference in his perception? Probably. But he never showed any inclination to fight for full equality and acceptance during his life time. For that matter, Reagan hardly had a spectacular record with any other minority group.
