Under Mills : " My kid is an honers student ."

Under Mills " honors " sections increased 3x and what was a regents diploma became " a regents diploma with distinction " .

The research shows that there is no decrease in academic performance in districts operating on austerity budgets .

Perhaps now they can get someone in that position who has the intellect to develop a plan to raise the achievements of students WITHOUT making their education all about test prep. As an elementary school teacher, I have observed my curriculum go from teaching students the content area, to teaching the students mostly about how to take the state tests. Too much emphasis is put on these tests, and the result is that our children are becoming un-intelligent morons who know how to fill in a bubble sheet.

I did not like his method of disciplining professionals in arbitrary and capricious ways. That is to say that any professional his cronies wished to get rid of would be able to locate and synthesize allegations and then drop the boom on the professional.

I for one couldn't be happier to see him get lost.

Mills has been a disaster for the state of education in New York:

Roosevelt

Botched "Decisions of the Commissioner"

Focusing on tests rather than actual learning.

Graduation rates being one of the worst in the United States.

More than doubling spending during his tenure.

The Lawyer-Pension scandal (on his watch).

The Double-Dipper Scandal (on his watch).

The list can continue...

Mills has cost taxpayers millions of dollars in programs created by his cronies.Schools have gone away from teaching children American History,General Sciences,Literature and the Arts.In it's places he's instituted teaching to tests,ESL/DL programs and other programs that benfit few while hurting others and even leaving some children to fail. His cronyism is borderline criminal and to see him leave is a positive.

I agree with the teachers about teaching less subject matter; and more about how to take the tests. When my oldest daughter was in high school, the teachers taught how the take the regents 101. My twins weren't even taught high school biology, the teacher was mad because the regents format for their year wasn't released until several months after the school year began. He didn't teach them anything, but let's be real: biology is biology, he could have started SOMETHING until the test (Connetquots' guideline for teaching classes) came out.

Everyone talks about Mills like he's the anti-Christ of education but I think he did very well with running the State Education Dept., even in the face of all those who threatened for his head if he didn't do something that he really didn't have the power to do in the first place.
Get a friggin clue

He underperformed even your low standards and expectations.
