Yes sireee bob! You can trade in that gas guzzler that only gets 18 mpg for a real environmentally sweet ride of an SUV that gets 22 mpg and you get the taxpayers to fork over upwards of $4,500 toward the purchase of your new ride! Say, I hear the Japanese auto makers are doing a right fine job selling the most of the new vehicles in the Obama-Democrat taxpayer funded "Cash for Clunkers"! Where can I get in line for some of dat free money$ I'll even re-register as a Democrat if it helps!

I disagree with 'Realist'. This is a smart way for the government to keep the auto industry afloat while not directly just handing the auto industry tax payers' $$$$. If I were the senators or congress men that passed this law I would have restricted the rebate only for cars built in the USA, or better yet, only to GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles built in the USA, since it's our tax $$$$ paying for the program. I think the Republicans would have sat on their thumbs while the US auto industry went the way of the US consumer electronics industry.

It's like killing pigs to prop up the pork industry. Except there's no market for 2nd hand pigs. So this is worse.

This cash for clunkers program is just wrong. It is so unfair to some people. My gardener was able to trade in his beat up work truck and that thing must have been 20 years old, filthy and falling apart. I doubt the guy would have gotten $200 if he tried to sell it. He now drives a brand new shiny truck. It's already dirty and full of rusty tools.

I on the other hand can't get this $4,500 from the government. When we wanted a truck for when we needed to move something, we had to pay like $45,000 for it. I promise you that I pay much more then my gardener in taxes and if anything, I should get double the clunker amount for having never even been in a rusty old car or truck.

My gardener had better never again ask for more money when I request just a little bit of extra work done. The nerve of him being able to get this kind of deal buying a vehicle.
