District 228 report card looks bad, apparently the district has been overrun with low socioeconomic students, in one year.
Dr. Kendall and Dr. Williams presented information on the District Report Card
including the significant challenges we face, both with our low socioeconomic
status and our operating fund deficit. The State has not delivered promised money.
Dr. Kendall saluted Mr. O’Malley and the Board. Dr. Williams spoke regarding the
growth in content proficiency and college and career preparedness

I have been saying this for years but as you can see from the lack of postings no one really cares

Some folks do, people need it handed to them and explained the consequences. There should be some comment section somewhere on a local website to really understand the impact of the boards activity. Also other school related info, parent to parent. Parent involvement meetings are great but the administration meets without us most of time we should also. Timing is always a problem so the web should work fine. People are on vacation in the summer too. Although I didn't get replies , it was judged. Many people check topix.

so what to do???

Dist. 228 June Finance meeting:
Health & Dental Insurance Renewal
The Finance Committee reviewed and discussed the proposed renewal from Gallagher. The Dental
renewal rates call for a 7.7% increase. The HMO renewal rates will increase by 3% and the PPO renewal
rates will increase by 7%. These rates are based on claims experience and are within the market trends.
The Superintendent recommends full Board approval for these renewals.
Is this why my property value went down while my taxes to 228 went up?? In this economy we cannot afford this.
The Finance Committee discussed the wireless upgrade that will take place this summer at Tinley, Oak
Forest and Hillcrest High Schools. Bremen was completed a couple years ago. This upgrade will enhance
our network infrastructure allowing the capabilities for the schools to handle a BYOD (bring your own
device) initiative in the near future. The Committee was in favor of moving forward with this option.
Bremen may have Wi-Fi but yours kids can't use it. The upgrades to the other schools are likely to be much better than Bremen's as this technology is always improving. What is the master plan for Wi-Fi and will Bremen still be compatible?? This administration needs to get the word out on what they are doing, I know we pay people who are responsible for that (I think they used to have a newsletter for this)but they don't let the people who pay their salary know anything unless they read their encrypted minutes that are posted 30 days latter.

This is the main problem with Dist. 228
Follow the money.....
Mrs. Evelyn Gleason
She has been there much too long and practices extreme nepotism while staffing the board with people she controls. She has no skin in the game and has no concern for these kids education. Her only concern is about controlling money that is not hers. Please retire Evelyn we need fresh blood.

I agree, my taxes have gone up over $900 in the last 2 years ($500 last yr,$400+ this year), although my property value has gone down. When I took a close look at this year's statement, almost 3/4 of the total were school taxes. About $3,000. My school taxes went up $300 from last year!

I looked at Bremen school's stats before my kids started High School. It's a failing school and I don't see how it will turn around. I do know that if a student is in the top of the class and studies come easy to them, they can get a decent education, but if your child struggles academically, then I can only assume that they would not get anywhere in a failing school. It's too bad that I need to keep paying all these taxes into a school system that I don't feel I can send my kids to.
#11 Jul 29, 2012
Its failing because of the high percentage of minority students. I know a few of the specks of salt in the pepper district known as Markham grade schools. Its all the teachers can do to just get the pepper to sit down and no be completely disruptive when they are there let alone try and learn anything.
You just have to look at the workers of your local Target or Walmart or McDonalds to see who was not on a fast track to learning and success in school.

Furthermore I would bet my house that there is a direct correlation between Bremens falling test scores with the lowering number of white students attending.

With the changes in the curriculum starting last year they dumbed down the top classes. It used to be a teachers recommendation was needed to attend an AP course. Dr. Kendall and Dr. Williams told the guidance office to stuff the class with as many kids as they can regardless of the teachers recommendation. The top students and teachers are not happy about this. Also Dr. Williams did her dissertation on "Physics First" were they teach freshmen physics before they have even passed an algebra course. It won't work in this district as most of the incoming freshmen are not ready. The scores have been dropping throughout the district and this is her response. I know a freshmen who had this class, they said all they did was watch videos and the kids in the class didn't understand them. The school board has no time for parents complaints as they are more concerned with controlling the contracts and jobs. There are some excellent teachers at Bremen but this board is not hiring the best that they can. Oak Forest Patch has a picture of one of their hires he got busted fondling a student. Parents need to keep an eye on this board if they want to get their kids into college. Also regardless of the color of peoples skin, if this administration would focus on quality teaching with the teachers input as part of the program, Bremen's reputation would reflect positively on the community as a whole. This would increase your homes value. The fact that Bremen is small makes this proposal manageable. This could only happen if parents communicate with each other and the board, they presently think no one is watching.

The color is not the issue the lower income is. It's called the education gap. ProPublica did a study on it Educators just now seem to be taking note on a large scale. It makes sense: if a kid with money goes on a vacations every year to Europe, Disney World, and travels throughout the U.S. And the other kid doesn't make it out of the county, was never introduced to educational toys etc. The poor kid is at an educational disadvantage. The up side for us locals is if you keep your kid inline and in the best classes and score well on the ACT and SAT he will get noticed by colleges, as they take your zip code into account.

This is what BHSD228 hires. This is a relative of a friend of the board. We had pride...
#16 Jul 30, 2012
Concerned you have some great points. I would also like to add that parental involvement is a huge contributor to success in school. A lot of lower income students have parents that either don't have the time, don't know enough, or just don't care to help their student. Money is not the solution and longer school days (like 143 did) is a joke. Education needs to be taken more seriously in this country starting with teacher education. In other countries (such as Sweden I believe) a master's degree is the least amount of education needed to be a teacher. Nepotism is a huge problem when it comes to school boards and higher ups, but to blame the board for the teacher that from the article is a little unfair. Think about how most people get a job, it's usually because they knew someone who could vouch for them. This isn't any different in education, and who better to hire than a family member of a teacher who has been at the school for years, and has done a good job. I don't think anyone could have predicted his awful behavior.

The public will probably never know because they make these decisions behind closed doors. I am aware of a new young teacher from a state school who lost out to a candidate from South Sub/Governors state who was connected to our school board. This board seeks no input from the public, some school boards even have a student adviser on the board. This board doesn't even have a newsletter informing the public as to what they can expect from them. I would like to see an "Ask the Super" feature on their website where Kendall can keep us informed on their master plan and school inequities within the district. There news releases are so biased, they never tell everything they do.
Yes parent involvement is crucial along with teacher involvement for programs to help bring these kids up to par on a global level. They cancelled one such program to institute Williams physics first experiment. Shame on them.

Bremen HS will now have two Honors English courses for incoming freshmen. Previous years they only had one. It was overheard that many of the kids last year were not ready for the course. So how is it that now we have two Honors English courses. Forcing kids into honors and AP courses diminishes the course making it harder for our top kids to compete with schools that have a much higher ACT score than our 17.6. The dumbing down continues.

How is it that the line to waive registration fees is so long, while they are all holding iphones and driving new SUVs? Apparently only fools pay full price.
#20 Aug 1, 2012
You might not know this but people are faking that they are doing alright because of shame and embarrassment. I know of a Mom and kid that are living in their Escalade. The SUV was paid for before she lost her job.
