I just read the most remarkable book about Whittle's Mill. In case you don't know (or, more likely, can't remember!), Whittle's Mill is a very old grist mill on the Meherrin River near South Hill. It has been the local (and best!) swimming hole for generations of kids who grew up in South Hill, and many have other great experiences there which can't be mentioned on a public site.

Anyway, there is a great book about the history of the old mill that I just purchased and read. It was really interesting, bringing in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and even the ghost of Angie's Bridge into the very well-written and beautifully illustrated book.

You can read about the book on author Max Crowder's website at www.whittlesmill.org . The book is available for sale at Martin's Gifts, the Tobacco Farm Life Museum and the SH Town Office. You can also order the book online from the website (which is also well worth reading for free!). I just bought two additional books to give to my Dad and Uncle as Christmas presents. If you have great memories about the old mill or are interested in Southside Virginia's lost history, I recommend it highly.
