Are you really a teacher? You don't think that what the student experiences in the hallway follows him or her into the classroom? You don't think that the endorsement, or at least tacit consent, of a hostile learning environment affects a students' performance? Really? Really?!
As adults, we're encouraged to "rise above" bullying, to be the bigger person. Young people need more than rhetoric they need to see that there is a supportive leadership. they need to see that their teachers care about them as individuals. If you really feel this way about bullying, perhaps you would best serve your students by a change in careers.
Of course it's a problem. I'm addressing a bigger issue that is continually ignored by the mainstream media. Tracking needs to be reestablished in schools so that the brightest are with the brightest. Bullying is a serious problem in today's society, but we hear a lot more about it than the constant attempts of politicians and schoolboards to drop honors and high honors courses because certain colors show up more often in them. That will truly rot our society.

Bullying is a problem because it is tolerated, plain and simple!!

Make it a punishable offence in a court of law ,and maybe it won't be a issue anymore.

I do believe that there are two problems. The first is home, parents who don't want to believe there little angel is a hateful bugger who gets pleasure out of ridiculing others. Too often I have heard, "I spoke to X and they said they didn't say it, another child did" that and the good old "They told me they would never say that however they did say >>>>>>> "

The second problem is that administration doesn't do much. There hands are tied. If the kid is sped, then they have an ed plan and that complicates things. We all know that kids with ADHD don't know that bullying is wrong right? No but they have more rights than the victims. Also many administrators don't even want to deal with it. They hardly even discipline the kids who are physically abusive. They call the parent and then the tree comes in, when they feel like it, and defend the apple all the way home.

Blame the teachers, the lowell sun does. Lowell school system didn't have workshops or training on the new laws yet, why? They just don't care.
