hey VFW - don't be surprised if another measure or resolution gets passed along requiring residents and businesses to pay for street repairs.
(Yes, the only real area that is flourishing is the Marshall's area.)
You should know they FAILED to land any business (so far, that is) in that yellow grass infested lot behind Shively Middle School. And Yes, the city council got convinced by the company that built the new senior apartments next to 7-11 off of Peck Rd. and Michael Hunt Drive to lend that same company a couple of million to finish the project, even though the contractor initially claimed no additional funding was needed to complete it. And now look at it, it barely has anyone living there. Even though the 1st floor is a strip mall for businesses, yet again, they have FAILED to convince any business to set up shop.
And what about El Paisano, that burrito place won the Eminent domain cases that the city and the contractor of those Peck Road Senior Apartments tried. Basically they wanted to bulldoze the place for parking. The city and the contractor should've just left well enough alone, but no, like the crybabies and thieves that they are, they "skirted" around the rulings by re-paving the diagonal parking El Paisano had next to it to make a direct route to the underground parking lot that sits below those Senior Apartments, and the owner of El Paisano is losing business, not a whole lot, but that little tactic is making a difference. Who knows what amount of litigation he must endure before a REASONABLE outcome is reached, and it isn't exactly cheap either!
And what about the animal feed store that was a staple of the South El Monte community? Slowly and surely businesses will leave the city limits, and like clockwork, they council will scramble for BxUxLxLxSxHxIxT resolutions that will tax us again for their screw-ups.
The sewage fee is ridiculous, I mean I got to pay them to take a shit?! are you kidding me? They knew these sewage lines needed drastic repairs (or So they say) a long time ago, it was not until the screw-ups of similar lines in the West L.A. area earlier this year; that is when the council finally "realized" that a resolution was needed.
Meanwhile all this crap is happening, well last at least, they figured *without really verifying so* that the city was fiscally sound for 2009, and what do they do? Give themselves a 10% raise to sprinkle around, and let's not forgot that stupid "car allowance" they gave themselves. Boom! 2010 wasn't as strong as they thought, so to continue paying themselves that extra 10% from a year ago, they let go of 10 City Workers. NUMSKULLS, the whole lot of them.
[yes my thoughts are random like that when it concerns where I live]
{and no, I didn't blast the city on their facebook page, the council itself is making itself play the fool everyday with their BxUxLxLxSxHxIxT

I don't know where you get any of your information, but I sincerely hope any one of you would attend council meetings and really get the facts staight.

I have attended these meetings consistently for over ten years, and I have to say to you that a great deal of what your stating is not correct.

Listening to meetings on the web or looking at the city web-site is only a small fraction of the picture.

Your comments are very negative and full of anger.

I have never agreed 100% with how things have been done in the past decade, but the city has come a long way since I have been a resident.

Funny how I don't know who you are, but you claim to be a "concerned resident".

Fact is, anyone who has ever had an issue, has come to city hall and attended a meeting and let the city know how they feel. I can respect these people.

You hide behind a computer and write your angry, negative comments which only turns people off.

I want to encourage you to come to the next council meeting on November 9th and tell the city everything that concerns you.

More importantly, if your so fed up with the city, and how they are running it, then why don't you run for city council?

I would seriously consider listening to what you have to say in a public forum.

I pray for you that you may get over your anger and negativity.

VFW, I suggest you read your own angry comments, Pot calling the kettle black? But I guess when you are one of "them" then your skewed, one sided point is just that (or is it your kids on the council?). In an earlier negative post you said if unhappy, then move out. I was raised in SEM & had enough sense to go to school, get my PHD in economics and move the heck out. Unfortunately, my parents love SEM, their home is paid off and refuse to leave, despite acknowledging that most of the council now and in years past is corrupt. And yes, I know for a fact, scare tactics are used consistently to freak out the most vulnerable, senior residents of SEM to vote this way or that, whatever way is convenient for the council members to cushion their pockets. So VFW, since you know so much, are SEM residents also footing the bill for the two council members that are getting married? Is the sewage $ from the residents going to pay for the Taco Man at the wedding? Wow, two council members married? Seems like conflict of interest...I smell a coverup in So.Bell Monte...

VFW is probably one of those kiss ass suck ups...in it for her own personal gain. As for the reason why that measure passed, I believe because the Senior Citizens back the City Council. Haven't you ever noticedall the money that is used on the Senior Center and the events and programs new ones all the time, for the Seniors. I'm not saying that is a bad thing or the city shouldn't do that for our Seniors, but they should do it for every aspect of the City. Another case of wash my back...I'll wash yours. Seriously ...dumb enough to vote for a tax increase??? Really?...Best thing us citizens can do is not shop in SEM

You are so right on the Seniors being overly catered-they have all these events, trips, the facility is clean, etc ...but they are the City's majority voters (and every politician knows this). Now take a few steps to the messy community center and see if they offer any of those services there for the kids.
