I've always found that a strong education comes from the home. Parents must take an interest in their child's learning. Not to say there are no bad teachers, but, West Virginia's population for the most part just doesn't seem to put a lot of care in to it.

Another thing to blame parents for. By god let's blame parents when the weatherman is wrong too. Most parents aren't trained and educated in psychology, history, English, math and every other thing the school system receives multi billions of dollars for. A lot of time the children are with the educators more than they are with working parents. "Yay, so let's not do our jobs because parents are an easy mark to blame for our incompetence". Is that the new teacher mantra? So you want me to punish my child because the overpaid teacher can't teach them properly. Make the teacher give them a good education and I'll make sure they don't lie, cheat, steal, cuss, rob banks and emotionally fall apart every time their feelings are hurt and everything else a parent has to do.

Tomblin isn't going to slap any teacher, he is all for the teachers. His wife is over SWCC in Logan. There is no need to worry about children going to college, because there are no jobs around here for them.He needs to try and help these coal miners. He doesn't seem to be trying to help them. That is why I did not vote for him, he is an Obama man just like Manchin, Rahall, AND A FEW OTHERS.

The only way he can help miners is to get them bigger TVs to see that coal mining is a dead industry. They need to move on

You people are clueless, kids learn the most in the first three years of their life, that's prior to school age, btw.. if parents don't step up and take an interest in their child's education, then teachers are hand cuffed, you have one kid to pay attention to, teachers have 20+ to teach at once, they can't focus on a single child that has lazy arse parent that don't care...... I feel bad for our teachers....

I feel bad for our teachers.... 20 years ago they had 40 kids in class and used that as an excuse. Now the classes are 20 students and they are still whining about it. Give me more money, less responsibility and 3 months off if they can't handle it.

20 years ago parents actually took a position in children's education, and actually.made their kids learn, not like today, where parents just sit their kids in front of the TV while they go and do whatever....... And contrary to popular belief, teachers do not make that much money in WV...... It is considerably less than other states..

So do police officers and firefighters and lawyers and nurses and doctors and coal miners, for that matter! Most every profession in WV makes less than their counterparts in other states- dont like it, move! If teachers didn't hide behind their union, and actually worked for the good of students- such as year round schooling- and not just themselves, maybe we wouldn't be 49th or 50th in every category!

humph wrote: And contrary to popular belief, teachers do not make that much money in WV...... It is considerably less than other states.. Teacher salaries in West Virginia have continued to increase in the past three years. The average teacher salary in West Virginia in 2009 was $43,613, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is a 3.64 percent increase from 2008, when the average teacher salary in West Virginia was $42,540. This steady percentage information shows that West Virginia teaching salaries have been rising steadily for the past three years. West Virginia teacher salaries have increased in small increments, but have low national ranking in terms of teacher salaries. Teacher salaries West Virginia rankings have risen from 41st to 39th within two years. This is indicative of slow but consistent improvement in teacher salaries. West Virginia teacher salaries have had at least a 2.5% percent increase each year Earn your keep or get the hellll out of the profession.

That just goes to show how much you know, Teachers are actually for year round schooling, as is the teachers union, it is the parents that fight it every time it comes up.... As for the pay comment, the only reason I stated it, is because the other poster made a comment basically saying they are overpaid. I was proving a point..... So you can take your high horse and ride on..... Anti NEA wrote: <quoted text> I'm so sick of that bullshit argument, too. You are proving my point?? Teaching is a profession of love, not money.... The education level to pay in the profession is way off.... My other half has two masters degrees, one in elementary ed and one in English, and she barely makes 40k a year. She teaches because she loves it and love's making a difference in a young child's life. But it takes more than one, it takes the parents helping these kids along instead of just blaming the teachers for their kids laziness... tired of it wrote: <quoted text> Teacher salaries in West Virginia have continued to increase in the past three years. It's nice to love what you do but if what your doing isn't working then love it in another direction. First rate education means first rate salaries or just the opposite. They can blame no one but themselves

Sorry, but you can't blame the teacher when kids miss over 70 days of school! How many people on here who disparage the work of teachers actually are teachers? It's a hard job and most teachers work their asses off. Modt teachers work for hours before and after school. they do more that just teach, and most have more than one Job. And they ARE NOT paid on the days they aren't working (ie, lazy summers off). Teachers are paid a salary based on a daily rate.

Some parents would be in for the "shock of a lifetime" if they could observe their child/children at school while being unnoticed. Some parents' "good little angel" isn't "so good" outside the walls of their home! As a retired teacher, I am well aware of many of my former students that acted like completely obnoxious and disrespectful idiots at school while their parents had the preconceived notion that "their good little angel could do no harm". The question I often got was..."My son/daughter doesn't act this way at home. What are you doing to cause him/her to act this way?" Gimme a break!

Teachers whine.
Teachers are over paid (plus the perks), work part of the year for a salary greater than the average taxpayer.
Teachers under perform Never make it in the real world.
