Facts over fuss - commentary on the O'Gara Group,

A recent trip to the O'Gara Group Training Facility located in Halifax County, near South Boston and Danville, proved informative and cleared up a lot of speculation and misinformation--at least for me--that seems to have spread like wildfire around Westmoreland County.Having studied the information provided by O'Gara as to what their proposed operation in the county would entail and having spent many hours researching and verifying information from both O'Gara and many of its clients, as well as the county office, I was fairly certain about what to expect when I got there.

At the security gate, a guard welcomed me, and after I obtained clearance, I was directed to the main office of the O'Gara facility. I parked my car in a space in front of a green metal building with the O'Gara logo on it and went inside.

With only 30 minutes' notice that I was on my way, Scott LittleJohn, director of training, met me in the foyer and asked if I wanted a tour of the facility. For the next four hours, I was shown firing ranges, the racetrack, the classroom building, the urban-scenario building, the shoot-out house, and even rode with my heart in my throat as we climbed a set of steps in an SUV as we journeyed the obstacle course.

Locked gates greeted us at every firing range. I tried my best to hear gunfire and smell firing residue, but I didn't. I asked LittleJohn if there were students on the property, and he said, yes, a group from DynaCorp was there for a two-week training session. Several of the students had just returned from Iraq. Because of DynaCorp's contract with the State Department, I was unable photograph them or talk to any of them for any length, but the students--the men and women who could be your brother, sister, uncle, aunt, or cousin were courteous and polite. Most said "hi," mentioned the warm weather, and went on their way to their next class.

If that is the type of explanation the locals were given I am starting to understand why some of them have pretty mixed reactions.

I am sure that you have been involved with the military for a long time. People who haven't are not going to jump on board after that type of party line.

Westmoreland Native was doing a good job and I just felt that leaving out the 9/11 comments would have improved his post. Best to leave it up to him if support is what is needed.

That was not an explanation or a party line it was to make sure no one thought that Iraq was a response to 9/11. Everyone knows we were there for the oil :)

Does anyone know the status of this facility? It hasn't been in the news lately and was wondering if the facility is coming to Westmoreland.

It is in the process of being built. However, there are various lawsuits in progress by the NIMBY's.

Shooting range has been built in Montross and now in operation. I'm 1.25 miles from the range and the automatic gunfire continued until at least 9PM last night and was loud with all the tree cover between us... when setting on my pier and deck we can't even enjoy the outside anymore in the evening when they start firing on that range. I feel for those poor residences that live right behind it they probably hear it inside their house. County needs to shut this group down at 5P M-F and no firing on the weekend so we can enjoy our properties. It is totally unacceptable and the county and state politicans who allowed this training facility should be sorry for what they have done. I know I will be voting against the incumbents responsible regardless of what temporary jobs it provided or the little bit of taxes Ogara will pay.

How about some measurements from that distance and weather conditions?

Sorry you are being disturbed. You should call the training facility directly and let your feelings be known. Right now the "temporary jobs" they are providing are 26 full time employees and 40 part time employees. They are spending $800,000 per year at local hotels to lodge students and hiring local restaurants to cater meals as well hire contractors to rehab the manufacturing building as well as purchasing supplies at local hardware stores, auto shops, etc.

The Northern Neck is nothing but a disgusting backwater toilet and I'm frankly surprised that any business would have considered coming here. I can't wait until I get the heck out of this rural hellhole!
