Facts over fuss - commentary on the O'Gara Group,

A recent trip to the O'Gara Group Training Facility located in Halifax County, near South Boston and Danville, proved informative and cleared up a lot of speculation and misinformation--at least for me--that seems to have spread like wildfire around Westmoreland County.Having studied the information provided by O'Gara as to what their proposed operation in the county would entail and having spent many hours researching and verifying information from both O'Gara and many of its clients, as well as the county office, I was fairly certain about what to expect when I got there.

At the security gate, a guard welcomed me, and after I obtained clearance, I was directed to the main office of the O'Gara facility. I parked my car in a space in front of a green metal building with the O'Gara logo on it and went inside.

With only 30 minutes' notice that I was on my way, Scott LittleJohn, director of training, met me in the foyer and asked if I wanted a tour of the facility. For the next four hours, I was shown firing ranges, the racetrack, the classroom building, the urban-scenario building, the shoot-out house, and even rode with my heart in my throat as we climbed a set of steps in an SUV as we journeyed the obstacle course.

Locked gates greeted us at every firing range. I tried my best to hear gunfire and smell firing residue, but I didn't. I asked LittleJohn if there were students on the property, and he said, yes, a group from DynaCorp was there for a two-week training session. Several of the students had just returned from Iraq. Because of DynaCorp's contract with the State Department, I was unable photograph them or talk to any of them for any length, but the students--the men and women who could be your brother, sister, uncle, aunt, or cousin were courteous and polite. Most said "hi," mentioned the warm weather, and went on their way to their next class.

Ms. Yeatman-Spindler sounds like she works for the "Group". I trust she was a better editor than writer--perhaps had more focus then?

It's DynCorp not DynaCorp. They are the ones who trafficked in teenage girls in Bosnia, and then fired the one employee who complained. These guys are evil. O'Gara is just fronting for them in Westmoreland County. Soon the county will be overrun by arrogant, violent, steroid-abusing killers who will scoff at local law enforcement. The mercenary training base is planned to be over 1000 acres, not just 350. Yeatman-Spindler was easily fooled by her little visit to Halifax. Chandler, Risavi, and Stuart are selling Montross down the river.

Bryan Chandler will scurry out of town with his money, Dick Stuart will be rewarded and move on to his home in Stafford,

to the posters above - be careful who you align yourself with and the statements you make, they may come back to haunt you in a court of law. you have moved into this community and brought your rude, pushy, in your face combative politics that will be your own undoing.

those of us born and raised here in Westmoreland county dont take kind to come here's lowering the class of disagreement. for hundreds and hundreds of years our families have poured blood, sweet, and tears in making the Northern Neck what it is. we also realize there comes a time for managed growth and oportunities that allow us to remain full time residents of the county and not have to move away.

for those interested in making informed decisions information about this company can be found at www.ogaragroup.com

The anti O'Gara groups are spreading misinformation to further their NIMBY cause. Their prediction of violent O'Gara trainees causing a danger to the community has not happened in Danville. I know someone who works in law enforcement down there and he says they have more of a problem with the drug dealers and domestic violence and have not had any run ins with O'Gara trainees. It may have to do with the fact that many of the trainees are police officers and U.S. military. O'Gara does not train mercenaries. They train mostly law enforcement, U.S. military, and contract security. They do not train mercenaries to fight in foreign armies. O'Gara has been a good and responsive neighbor in Danville. They allow local law enforcment agencies to use their training facilities, utilize local businesses for food/lodging/supplies, and put on driver safety training for local teens.

Yes there have been problems with contract security in our war efforts. But there has also been problems with military misconduct also. These are rare cases and have been delt with by our justice system. We need to be proud of the service that the military and contractors have provided in dangerous places.

As a "from here" in the area where this development will be I can tell you it would have been much better received had if it had been outside of the town limits. When you put something like this across the street from the only shopping market in the town, it disturbs everyone's peace of mind.

seems like you have contracted the stray bullet syndrome ......... contact Danville and see how many local people have been killed by stray bullets from OGara's other facility. the answer may ease your mind.

JS Lucas steroid abusing killers? After 9/11 everyone wanted to prevent terrorism. Here years later people like you hate the idea of a place protecting your country. And what makes you say these guy use steroids? I am a 20 year old from Westmoreland. I work at the new O'Gara in Montross as a maintenance man. some people say O'Gara doesn't hire locals. Well news for you all our maintenace employees are from Montross. And in all honesty I have never had a better job. These men are the best group of guys I know. They give local building supplies buisness along with a deal with Angelo's (local restraunt run by westmoreland native Brian Oliff)where Angelo's supplies classes with food. These men are doing no wrong and like the community. The community is not willing to accept change. The county makes a mistake in building the shell building then O'Gara does the county a favor and offers to buy it and still the county can't sell it due to arrogant people in the community. Many people say the guns will be a nuisance. First of all we live near Dahlgren and we hear loud noises frequently. Secondly if you are from Westmoreland you will see hunters from november to january all through the town of montross. So your saying as a community you can deal with us hunters running dogs and shooting deer all the time but you can't support a group trainig people to fight terrorism? People please think about it maybe you need to swallow your pride and realize this O'Gara Group is a good thing for our area. I don't understand why everyone has a problem with O'gara coming to Montross yet Carry On Trailer Inc. hires tons of illegal immigrants year round but the comminity is fine with these people taking American jobs.In the end we all will realize O'Gara will help the community.

By the way O'Gara won't scoff at local law enforcement. They actually invite them to come down all the time. Get your stuff straight.

Very good post and from someone who knows the Company from the inside. NIMBY is alive and well in the Northen Neck. You are correct in your assesments from my past experience in life. You may be able to reduce the export of the young people from Westmorland County who would like to stay but for the lack of a future.

Thats good to hear.......hopefully the relationship will continue to grow between the business and the county and that both sides see a lot of benefits.

At some point maybe the Westmoreland News will stop printing stupid articles about a different division of the company in another country just to throw mud at them. The last year or two that newspaper has gone done hill.

Well said Westmoreland Native!!! The locals here keep saying that O'Gara trains mercenaries and the newspaper reporters state it is a corporate soldier training facility. This is simply not true. O'Gara trains law enforcment officers, U.S. Military members, and private security.

I would like to see O'Gara bring their operation to the Colonial Beach side of Westmoreland County. They would be welcomed and an asset to the community. We are used to hearing guns much larger than any gun fired at O'Gara and we have places for them to stay and numerous restaurants and shoping. I don't blame that end of the County to not want O'Gara in their backyard; they have nothing in common and have become a bunch of rich retirees from Richmond and NOVA. O'Gara, come to Colonial Beach and talk to our local business people, find a tract of land to rent and feel welcomed.

The Truth. Unfortunately O'Gara won't be able to come to Colonial Beach. The Group is very settled in in Montross everything is being built. The community is still fighting this thing which i don't understand why. O'Gara is here business is coming in and there is no intent in moving. But I definatelly understand what you mean. It would bring buisness to the beach area.

if my info is correct, they have had several training groups come amd go already through the training courses over the last 6 months and I have not heard of any complaints about loud noises. sounds like they are off to a good start if you ask me and providing needed business for locals.

I live in Colonial Beach but I was thinking more income for the county in general, spread the business development throughout the county. I travel quite a distance in order to work and feed my kids,Montross to me is just a quick jot down the road. As far as noise, hasn't anyone lived near a military base before? That argument doesn't have much grounds considering the military's presence in the area...which I welcome by the way! Thanks to all of you who have and continue to serve.

Many of your comments are well received by me. However, starting with the comment about after 9/11 turned it around. Perhaps the response to 9/11 was over zealous and aimed at the wrong country. Seems as if there were no weapons of mass destruction as so many had forecasted. Not everyone was in favour of that manoeuver in spite of your comment to that effect. It didn't help in building your case.

The Iraq War, also known as the Occupation of Iraq, The Second Gulf War Operation Iraqi Freedom, or Operation New Dawn is an ongoing military campaign which began on March 20, 2003.
The War in Afghanistan is an ongoing coalition conflict which began on October 7, 2001
The War in Afghanistan was the direct response to 9/11 and we sidelined it to deal with a precieved UN WMD problem that turned out to be WACAMOLE.
