Finally an article that states the truth....long before Dano Jr took his very first drink of beer, John White had already broken the law! Having an ILLEGAL WEAPON!
Wild West....You Betcha!

Your op-ed piece, Sound Beach reeks of Wild West angers me beyond belief. First of all, I noticed that the author does not even live in Sound Beach as I do since her brief bio reads,âClaudia Gryvatz Copquin, author of "The Neighborhoods of Queens," writes frequently for Newsdayâ Secondly, alcohol related violence is found within every community on Long Island, New York State and clear across the country. But, she chooses to tear down a community that I have grown to love and feel safe in raising my children in.
It is a community where neighbor helps neighbor especially when faced with a crisis or an emergency and I have been witness to that since moving to this wonderful community. It is a community that has a wonderful property ownerâs association called the Sound Beach Property Ownerâs Association and on any hot summer day you will find us enjoying each otherâs company at our beach where we reconnect with each other, have great times together and love each other. I know so since most summer days that is where you will find me.
We have a Clam b que where once a year we come together for a night of fun under the stars and eat until we cannot eat anymore. We have a civics association that comes together communicating our needs to our elected officials.
In Sound Beach we have a local deli, and two pizzerias, a Chinese restaurant, Mattâs One Stop who repairs our cars and in each establishment it is where folks know each other by their first name. Does this writer even know these facts? If Newsday would like a writer to report to all what it is like living in Sound Beach, New York, I am your writer.

" In his recent New Yorker article about this tragedy, Calvin Trillin noted that Suffolk County is a place rich with active and retired police officers, "and where even a lot of residents who aren't own guns - a place where it is not surprising to come across a plaque that bears the picture of a pistol and the phrase 'We Don't Dial 911.'" "
Calvin Trillin, noted Suffolk County expert, said that? Well, then, it surely must be true! Funny, in over twenty years of living in Suffolk, I've never, EVER seen such a plaque. If I ever did, I would be more than surprised. I'd be shocked and appalled.
"In Suffolk County, though, folks ought to be reckoning with their own strange notions of law and order..." I think, rather, that Newsday ought to be reckoning with their own strange notions of what is worthy of inclusion in your paper!! You should know better than to allow someone to paint an entire county with the brush used to color a single unfortunate incident occurring within. Ridiculous!

After rereading the New Yorker article I said to myself" Hmmmm I've been living & traveling all over LI for 35 years & I never saw one of those "We don't dial 911" plaques either. I wonder what truck stop he saw that sign in?

As a resident of Sound Beach, I can assure the author of this article, who obviously knows nothing about our community, that her "we don't dial 911" signs are nonexistant. Furthermore, every community from here to the West coast has problems with underage drinking and these same communities, from coast to coast, have parents who refuse to accept responsiblity for their underage children's actions. My first reaction after reading her "opinion" was to invite Miss Copquin to sample our quiet hamlet nestled on the North Shore with our quiet tree lined streets, beaches devoid of crowds, and our quaint small town feel that is so hard to find on Long Island anymore, but then, I thought, why would I want to invite some mudracking psuedo-journalist to invade our usually quiet community.

Its just another pro John White article to try & make people feel sorry for the poor man. Well he should just own up to the facts that he broke the law & was found guilty by the court. Now do the time. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY! Simple fact! Its a nice messege the Whites are trying to teach their son. Just like the OJ trial, if you pay enough money to some mouthpiece lawyer, you can get away with murder? The color of the defendants skin having no bearing on it. And all that garbage John White is a nice quiet guy, well, I remember reading reports stating that Ted Bundy was a nice guy also. Makes no difference

why, oh why does anyone put up with NEWSDAY? it's tha mortal enemy of the home owners and tax payers of long island. it's blatantly unfair in matters political and racial. it constantly works against the best interests of long island and in favor of NYC. in short; CANCEL NEWSDAY! the sooner NEWSDAY is gone, the better off LONG ISLAND will be.
