Sounds like the lowest life-form on earth, a lawyer. This guy drank alcoholic beverages and got behind the wheel of his car, nobody force fed him liquor and nobody welded the keys to his hand. He made a decision to break the law and he hurt a group of people when he did it, fortunately HE DID NOT HIT A LIMO AND KILL A YOUNG GIRL

Thank you Bill, you put into words what I had scrambling through me head. Devils Advocate did not make any sense to me, cause I could not figure out why he thought Drinking and Driving had anything to do with losing ones freedoms. He sounds a bit out there.

No- you punish people who have comitted actual crimes. The simple answer is to punish drunks who have actually caused injury accidents more severely. For instance: If you are drunk and cause an accidenht and it is your fault, you go to jail for 10 years...see how fast drunk driving would greatly diminish.
Youi DO NOT infringe upon the privacy of everyone and curtail the rights off all innocent people because some people commit crimes.
We are supposed to be presumed innocent until proven guilty- not automatically assumed guilty until proven innoccent. Youi can only have a free society when you have laws that punish actual criminals who have committed crimes and who have been proven guilty. When you institute laws that are designed to prevent potential crime rather than punish actual crime, yuou condemn all people as potential criminals and treat them so- and that is the destruction of freedom. It also assumes that the state has the right to control the actions of all people without regard to guilt.
Punish real criminals...those who are proven guilty, and punish them severely, and the rest of us can both be safe and retain our rights. And we wouldn't need so much government intrusion.
Oh, Magoo, you've done it again. DWI IS a crime, don'tcha know, whether you hurt/kill someone or not. The novel idea behind that law is the hope of preventing so many injuries/deaths.

Yep! A polkice state where we have no rights or privacy will solve all of our problems, just like it did in Germany!
WEll, since you mentioned Germany. It costs about $10,000 to even get a drivers liscence people would never dream of drinking and driving there. DWI is actually unheard of in Germany.

Lock them up...better yet, just kill these cellphone drivers...they made the choice to drive while talking, and now they have to pay!
Far-fetched, right?
Go ahead, bash away. Live in your freakin hypocritical world..."How DARE they drink & drive, I would NEVER do that". How many accidents were there last night that we didn't hear about that didn't involve alcohol? Why is "The News" as printed by Newsday and other media outlets always scare-tactic, populist nonsense?
Fine...lynch this person for making a bad mistake and injuring innocent people. It's true that there should be consequences to illegally driving drunk and causing harm to others. But please spare me the "Just shoot them" mentality that will inundate these boards, because I promise you that in your lifetime, they'll be coming after you for one of the "freedoms" that you currently enjoy.

I went to a party mom
I remembered what you said
You told me not to drink
So I drank soda instead

I felt real proud inside mom
The way you said I would
I didnít drink
Even though my friends said I should

I know I did the right thing mom
I know youíre always right
Now the party is finally ending
As everyone drove out of sight

As I got inside my car mom
I knew Iíd get home in one piece
Because of the way you made me
So responsible and sweet

I started to drive away mom
As I pulled onto the road
The other car didnít see me
It hit me like a load

As I lay here on the pavement mom
I hear the policeman say
The other man was drunk
And now I have to pay

Iím lying here dying mom
I wish youíd get here soon
How come this happened to me
My life burst like a balloon

There is blood all around me mom
Most of it is mine
I hear the parametic say
Iíll die in a very short time

I just wanted to tell you mom
I swear I didnít drink
It was the others
The others didnít think

He didnít know where he was going mom
He was probably at the same party as i
Hhe only difference is
He drank and I will die

Why do people drink mom
It can ruin your whole life
Iím feeling sharp pains now
Pains just like a knife

Tell my brother not to cry mom
Tell daddy to be brave
When iím up in heaven
Write daddyís baby on my grave

Someone should have told him mom
Not to drink and drive
If only they had taken the time
I would still be alive

My breath is getting shorter mom
Iím becoming very scared
Please donít cry for me
Because when I needed you, you were always there

I have one last question mom
Before I say goodbye
I didnít drink
So why am I to die

This is the end mom
I wish I could look you in the eye
To say these final words
I LOVE YOU AND GOODBYE

Sorry for your loss & your sister's injuries. Hope she makes a speedy recovery & then sues the ever-lovin' crap out of this clown.
I don't see an end to these tragedies. Just last night a car peeled out of the bar/restaurant near my house, skidded on the wet pavement & took out a road sign literally within inches of a telephone pole & a fire hydrant. Didn't even slow down for a second & kept on going. Was the driver drunk? Only the driver knows, this time.

Why should I as a non drinker pay extra for someone else's idiocy? Let them pay to attach it to their own cars when they get it back from impound.

Do NOT saddle 90% of the motoring public with some stupid feel good device which is only going to spring a cottage industry of designated blowers.

So let drunks keep killing people .. real good answer. Laws are made to protect the innocent. If people didn't drink & drive there would be no need for the government to step in. I agree with the previous poster about having breathalyzers installed in all vehicles.
The thing I would have a problem with is if someone drinking tried to start their car up through the breathalyzer, where a transaction was recorded .. later to be downloaded and used by the government to convict of DWI. If thatís how the system would work, than I completely agree with you and be against this form of legislation.
However, the car wouldn't start if the persone were drunk...

Some states have easily identified license plates for repeat offenders.

Maybe they should have a website with their addresses and vehicles, like the child molesters do, as their danger to life and property encompasses a much wider range of targets; it could be anybody.

Today a new law was addressed which would change punishment if there were children in the car.

All of this is unnecessary if the car is impounded and kept the first time they are stopped driving under the influence.

Simple.
