"We began my administration with 164 sworn officers and since then even more have retired," he said.

what a liar .. over 200 guys and 240 at one time .. just shows the incompetence of the mayor and administration to plan for the future .. its the stooges show on the second floor

Now do the city proud.
Stimulus

Rather than using stimulus money to build new homes for the P O R K Y S and moon crickets, the Fed Gov should give the money to Allentown to hire about 100 more cops. Then they should be taught to beat the snot out of the criminals.

The article reads that they are "loking to hire..." not looking to hire? Who the heck is proofreading the paper these days?

With the three hires, the city now has 200 police officers and is loking to hire 15 more, Pawlowski said. Since the fall of 2005, 83 officers have retired and the city has been trying to rebuild the department ever since.

I'm pretty sure that Dreamweaver or whatever MCall uses to create their websites in has spellchecker. Can anybody confirm this. Loking should have been flagged immediately. Right? Come on you so called Graphic Designers! You may not have proofreaders, but think about using spellcheck sometime. Glad that I was never called for an interview. I would go crazy working with numb nuts.

Not only have proofreaders been cut a long time ago, Tribune is so broke that they cut ties with spellcheck too. Bankrupcy at its best baby!

200 now? What is number in pipeline for retirement this year, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, if they all continue to opt into DROP. There is again another tidal wave building up of retirees coming.

I can only hope that they have posted, tested, taken all through HR process and have a pipeline of at least 100 names, because there is a high probability that when this tidal wave of retirements hits with next administration change, we will need 100-200 candidates in the pool to begin drawing from.

I also agree that, if Allentown is to become safe again, the fiscal house must be put in order (somehow) and that even previous high of 252 is not enough. We need 350 officers and we need to merge with Hanover (Lehigh) Township. This would provide the tax base needed and we can then provide for police and fire back-up to the area's least secured and most important asset, Lehigh Valley International Airport.

So in reality, we are about 150 officer short.

Again, I call for all officer to have a 4 year degree, residency going forward along with normal selection and training procedures. In return, APD officer should start out with salaries of $60,000 with bump to $70,000 with 5 years service, then COLA. Increased contribution for premiums, no defined pension, no health care plan in retirement, offered 457 Plan or other DCP for retirement. Mandatory retirement age 60. Minimum age for retirement age 55.

Great.
Get a job. Stop being a criminal...and then you will realize cops are not the "enemy".
The "pigs" never had to put me or my loved ones in jail. Sorry that you can't say the same.
By the way...How many kids do you have? I just want to know where my tax dollars are going.

To these new Officers...Thank you!

DRUGS MUST BE GREAT IN KOREA!!!The next wave will be less than 20 and on't happen for 5 yrs. Secondly, when the city advertises at the Lil Apple market and Wawa; what type of candidate do you think they are going to get??? As far as the idea for retirement, that won't fly either. A guy puts in almost 30 yrs and is supposed to walk away with no medical????YEAH RIGHT!!!
