Astrophile: Nude crashing stars spark radiation bursts

There are 1 comment on the New Scientist story from Apr 5, 2013, titled Astrophile: Nude crashing stars spark radiation bursts. In it, New Scientist reports that:

Old, tired and stripped almost bare, the loner star stands wrongly accused. For decades others of its kind have been blamed for setting off some of the most powerful explosions in the universe, leading to allegations that they have caused mass extinctions on Earth .

Interesting part of the article was the observation that GRB and the resulting radiation flare happens in dwarf galaxies.

These are the systems that are still condensing low metallicity population 1 stars and globular clusters.

Most GRB types appear to be formed from collision & merger of low mass stars in a dense environment such as a globular cluster core producing a large supergiant which then evolves to BH stage while still being dumped on.

There should also be a rather large number of fainter high end XRB types from more distant examples of the same thing.

The main reason why there are so many GRBs at distance is because of alignment, as the view down the pole of the star is a small segment of a sphere so there are more in the right direction @ greater distance. The cross section of the gamma ray laser is likely to be approximately Jupiter diameter. In rapidly precessing stars such as low mass dense cluster mergers the precession rate of the core may swing the GRB laser over our point of view in less than a second.

Low output GRBs are usually seen only @ very close range and in that case are glint reflections of a GRB from the surrounding nebula cast off by the evolving supergiant.

The possibility of a collision & merger GRB of 2 suopergiants is interesting but in that case the collision & merger takes place a fair amount of time before the eventual collapse of the core. It may however have a lot to do with the alignment of the star & a slow precession rate so in a merger remnant, the GRB will point in the same direction for a long time before precessing out of the way (see cross sectional area of the gamma ray laser produced @ the pole of a stellar mass accreting black hole surrounded by a dense plasma).

Have a nice day: Ag
