If you dislike drugs and users, all the more reason to support syringe programs. Eight U.S. funded studies, including studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Institute of Medicine, as well as numerous scientific studies that were not federally funded, have established that people who utilize a syringe service program are more likely to enter drug treatment programs than those who do not access such programs.

In reference to the shutting down of the Street outreach Program the city council should be ashamed of themselves. As a former IV drug usercurrently in recovery who has worked for needle exchange in varied locations thrpoughout the state the numbers of costly diseases decline with the exchange programs lowering health care costs, fewer arrests are made because of paraphenilia charges lowering incarceration costs, and the exchange workers aren't just handing out syringes they are handing out knowledge and hope that one day through a prolonged process they will be able to give up the dope game, as well as resuorces for help. I have personally seen many addicts helped into recovery by exchange workers. The point is that there is always going to be controversy on this subject but pulling something from a group of individuals that could lead to an infectious disease could actually do greater harm than good. Do me a favor. Next time you see an addict or alcoholic shake their hand and tell them they are cared about if you truly are human.

By state law, anyone can buy 30 syringes at a pharmacy. You cannot institute a one for one exchange at pharmacies under CA law.

be prepared for way more used needles than before. no needle exchange means that all the needles will be dumped on the sidewalk.

Wow! I've considered moving to Santa Cruz a time or two. Seemed like a nice place. But after reading through your posts, I don't have to worry about that idea anymore! Who wants to live among idiots and hatemongers? There are still lots of pretty places where people still care about the plight of EVERYBODY in their community.

Who cares if they sold the extra needles! The point is that the needles were given to someone in need. They are not 'dopers'(ridiculous term); they are human beings. This is not about what is right or wrong. This is about saving lives. I am sick of the stigma and the stereotypes.

Closing down a needle exchange site isn't going to lessen the amount of injection drug use, it just removes one of the only places where those can be disposed. The unintended consequence is sure to be MORE improperly discarded syringes.
Yes, because it's perfectly logical that if you provide less of something, more of it will magically appear. I shudder to think of the extra number of plastic bags that will be found littered about now that they have been outlawed in the county.

Once in a lifetime, if we are lucky, true leadership emerges:

When HUFF had only seven members, it already voiced two principles: first, it wanted to be a true ideologically
conditioned Movement; and, second, it wanted, therefore to be the sole power in Santa Cruz.

And when the great united columns of our movement march victoriously through Santa Cruz today, we know that you will join these columns as band will join band, drum will join drum and we know that Santa Cruz is before us, and behind us!

Sure we care about your "plight"!!

Now get off your Welfare-leeching butt and get a job.

Then your "plight" will get better.

And the taxpayers won't be stuck paying for your "FREE"ride.
