I am moving to Santa Cruz from out of state and I was wondering... where are the best places to affordably rent?

Happy to help, but you need to provide a bit more information.
How big a place?
How many people?
Where will you be working?
Do you care how far/long the commute is?
Children attending school?
Home/apartment/condo/SRO?
How much is 'affordable'?

The short answer is that Santa Cruz is an expensive place to live/rent.

If you're LGBT don't rent at the Mission Gardens Apartments at 90 Grandview Street. An adult gang of criminal harassers stalk anyone they perceive to be LGBT, trying to run them out of the apartment complex. The management firm -- The John Stewart Company -- condones this harassment, protecting the harassers.

The boarding house's are all on the west side and depends on whether class is in or not, those are the cheapest places, old town(right side of mall with back to clock tower facing mall) rents a lot but you have to walk around and look for signs-thats your best bet unless you want to live in mountains and lose your gas services etc.,

Don't go in any of the "clean and sober" or SLE-- sober living establishment's because they the exact opposite, you'll have the inner city crowd spiking your food and stealing your mail=I'm talking Amityville horror real fast, they'll seem nice at first, when they start talking "devil talk" like in the exorcist, you'll know what i'm talking about.

Don't forget to mention the rest of your bona fides John:

This post was by John Colby, section 8 dwelling, two decades running, unemployed parasite. John is well known in the area for writing letters to different public agencies excoriating their behavior and making demands. The mayor of Santa Cruz chastised him for diverting monies for the homeless for his own personal agenda.
28 of his neighbors in Mission Gardens Apartments presented a petition to the management company of his apartment complex demanding his eviction claiming he was a child molester. SCPD doesn't answer his calls because he's a known crank and cries wolf to often.
You can verify a lot of this if you just Google John Colby Santa Cruz or take a look at his LinkedIn page and you'll see just exactly how nutty he is.

He recently started a thread "Resources to protect children from sexual predators". That's really creepy considering his history. If you did move into Mission Garden you'd get to live near this whackjob.

And yet you, John Colby have lived there for how many years?

Well John, why don't you get off your lazy, Welfare leeching butt and get a job?
Then you can live in a nicer place!
But then you'll have to *GASP* pay for it yourself, instead of extorting your section-8 subsidy from the people that actually WORK!!!

At least 6 even though he says it's unhealthy and "killing his disabled sister." He must really love the drama!

it's just my wife and myself. We are looking to rent and gain a familiarity of the area. I definitely dont want to live in mountains, I am from West Virginia, and I am all too annoyed with it. I appreciate the information and I am looking forward to spending time in your city. I lived in Woodland, California for about a year and I really just want a coastal experience.

As far as crime goes, I'm not concerned. Where I'm from it's infested with detroit, chicago, columbus, pittsburgh, and baltimore drug dealers. I feel like i'm ready for anything. haha

if your "white" or native white french-non-ashakenazi?? You probably don't want to live here, there are a bunch of wannabe's here-- its a big asian latino sephardic/ashakenazi evil confluence or convergence of foreign organized drug crime, std spreading, racketeering. The native ashakenazi side with them for job security and to pad their wallets-- its really not a democratic society here-- most of the white non-judaic females here are lesbians and are our probably only sizable source of breeding females in the area-- alot of the state is the same way. Your probably in for a big letdown.

It sounds like you're serious about trying to get information about this place. I have no idea how you came across Topix or why you thought it would be a good place to get answers to your questions. It isn't, though. It's about as far from a normal, sane environment as you'll find in this town. John Colby's posts here alone should clue you into that.

Our drug dealers could at least hold their own against yours. And they've got cover from idiots like Robert Norse and the Indybay crowd to boot.

You may be getting more than you bargained for here. On the other hand, you may not. Regardless, you won't find answers on Topix. Check with a local realtor or the Chamber of Commerce. You'll get a more realistic idea from them of what this place is like to live in. Good luck.

most of the european tourists stopped showing up here about 10 years ago, some still do but not like they used too. Most go to monterey instead-- the 10 lost tribe racketeering groups and "la familia" foreign organized drug fronts bought in and washed narcotic money in real estate. This is not a white area , most of the evil confluence of latino asian sephardic/ashakenazi wannabe's foreign organized drug crime, racketeering and std spreaders do in fact claim white- they aren't - believe you me!!! If your a of Ashakenazi descent you will probably do well here, if your a french indian or any non-judaic, they'll run you off. The hasidic and ashakezim don't like here either because of the way the "white" non-judaic's get treated.

the non-judaic asian and negros get ran off also, like i said we don't have a democratic society here.-- north bay would be your best bet-- pharmaceutical opiates, drugs have alot of the areas up there ostracized. Oregon still has a democratic society.

the suicide rate of the non-judaic lesbians in our area is HORRENDOUS!!!

anyways-- if you know anyone who is having breathing problems in west virginny, well, it might be because of the produce ,juice-fruits or veggies grown out side the united states that are fecal contaminated where sewer treatment plants are few and far between and the food crops are watered with contaminated water. Use one tablespoon of clove powder cooked in a bowl of oatmeal- stay by a bathroom, the clove will push the zoonotic fecal infection right out --make sure the clove powder is real.-- good luck

wait I forget, the cat and dog doo in the garden or garden water will do the same thing and drought areas in the united states sometimes use contaminated water. You'll know if you sneeze or get a asthma attack if the food is fecal contaminated.
