New to area. Are mountain lions dangerous during early morning hours?

I want to walk for the exercise between 7 and 7:30am around Columbia. I am worried about the possibility of encountering a mountain lion in the area. I have seen one with some friends one night about two years ago in the state park at around midnight. It freaked us out a bit and we walked back home keeping our eyes peeled the whole way. How likely would a mountain lion approach and/or attack a 280 lb man? If so, would pepper spray get it to back off?

I have ben out and about in the woods, and lived many years in teh country. while I have seen a few Mountain Lions over the years, they usually kep their distance from people, unless you are bothering their food source (animal kill -- deer, sheep, and little critters). NEVER run from one, as it may provoke their instinct to chase. I have seen one years ago that roamed the North side of Columbia Airport, and there was one on the North side of the Stanislaus River at Knights Ferry. Both scampered away as we spotted each other. I would talk to a Park Ranger and ask them if Pepper Spray would work, I usually carry a fold up knife for protection. Hope this helps. You seem have made the correct movement -- walking away, not running. It think it wise to walk with a friend, too.
