There was an interesting article in the NY Times about the rise of sensationalistic television, both newscasts and reality TV which draws on people's yearning for more and more shocking programs.

We have decided as a family to discontinue watching this type of television. Instead, we are watching PBS, listening to NPR and more importantly focusing on television which addresses real world issues such as war, violence, poverty and hunger, global warming and pollution, and other issues which we feel will encourage our children to think about and desire to be part of a generation which seeks out peace in the world.
You may call us idealistic. But we believe that it has to start one household at a time.
