WAYNESVILLE, NC (AP)- A 22-year-old North Carolina woman who put her toddler in boiling water and burned his foot with a cigarette has been sentenced to prison.

Media outlets reported Tuesday that Tabitha Rich pleaded guilty to two felony counts of inflicting serious injury to her then-33-month-old son. She received a 25- to 39-month sentence on each, to run consecutively.

Prosecutors said Rich put her son in a pan of boiling water in October 2008 as punishment because he was constipated. He was treated for third-degree burns on his bottom. He had a cigarette burn on his left foot and other injuries.

Rich was ordered to have no contact with her son and to receive parenting training.

What?? Parenting classes are not going to fix her evil heart! All of her rights to her child should be taken! The justice system sucks in the U.S, that woman should be put in a pot of boiling water for punishment. If we do the inhuman things these parents to do their kids, I am positive there would be a huge decline in child abuse!

You are right, this woman does not deserve her child, or any child she may have in the future. As part of her punishment, they need to take away her rights to have children. Fix her!
Parenting classes will not do a bit of good. If she is able to do this to a toddler for being constipated, what will she do when he gets older, when there are more serious offenses, something he can help.
People that do not deserve their children, are the ones that get to keep them. If your child is late or tardy twice, the school will take you to court and take the child away. What sense does this make???

The criminal justice system is so messed up. They can't give her anything excessive because it would violate her rights. But what about the rights of the victim?!

She doesn't deserve to even have the right to give birth. They should do the same punishment she did to her baby...

I highly suggest sterilization - OOOPS - some say that would violate her civil right(s), she may want to have another kid to torture when (if) she gets released - As with chain saws , cars , motor cycles , crock pots , and even computers , shouldn't kids come with instruction manuals ?? Should there be a big red warning label on the front , saying , Do Not Boil Your Baby ??-The mother made a decision to cook her kid , now cook the mother - All her future offspring would be saved -

What you people need to realize there is more to this tragic event. This is a 22 year old mother who not wanting to make excuses but was diagnosed with Post Partum depression and was not treated and was ignored not only by social services but her physicians as well.
There is cases all thru history of woman who have this condition and are misdiagnosed while some may never seek treatment and too many times children suffer from the lack of knowledge of the family and society as a whole.

Let me explain just how far this condition can go, not on the media coverage, but my own personal experience.

There was a little girl who from the time of birth was fed turpintine in her bottle of milk, a little girl who had a broken hip, a little girl that spent every day with a mother that wanted to kill her. This mother was valvictorian of her high school class, A straight A student, Carreid a 4.0 grade average in college and was marreid to a U.S. Airforce Pilot. Had a new home and everything that most could ask for. Then she had another baby and at that time questions began to arise.
It took this mother 3 days home from the hospital after giving birth to baracade herself and daughters in a house, shoot every window out of the house and dared the military to intervene.
The military and her family ignored the warning signs and in the end. She went crazy.
This is a condition that even though we can sit back as say well they should do this or they should do that to these women, until you walk in the childs shoes, the mothers shoes and exerience the horrible condition that women do go thru as a realitiy to this Post Partum Depression, it is hard for the common folks to understand what triggers or makes women do these things. Some can go thru therapy and extensive treatment while also making husbands and families understand the mother after one episode should never go thru child birth again or be very careful with a decision to have more children with this underlying condition.

Oh and about that little girl and her mother.
That little girl was me. My mother was institutionalized until she died because she could not live with herself knowing that under whatever the reason of the condition she knew she hurt her children, the ones she loved the most. She took her life. Years ago Post Partum Depression was a secret that few families shared to talk about, today with media and medical research it is surfacing in the reality of life for some families and the pain it causes not only to the children but the whole family.

Well I am sure the child was even more depressed then the mother while all was being done to it. So my comment still stands.

How do you know she suffered from post partum depression? The article doesn't say anything about that. Not every mother who hurts their children have that condition.

Two questions - If the mother was in this serious condition , why didn't someone forcibly insure the welfare of the Child ??
I think I know the answer to # 2 already - Where was the father ??-What ever an idiot does to a baby or child , I think they should suffer the same fate - Some factions of OUR Gov't. support aborting unborn babies - So why not support mandatory sterilization - I'm at best , a mediocre parent , but mine made it through - No abuse , just strict upbringing - Why are these loons allowed to keep breeding ?- And , again , wherever the father is or was , he's 50% responsible , even if he wasn't present , God forbid that he knew this was possible -

I am sorry but depression is not an excuse for boiling your child....there is help for depression..it is something more than half he population has had to deal with...there are numerous medications and therapys for people who are suffering from it...what this woman did was just pure evil..so my comment still stands as well
so sorry

This is the point too many times family and society looks the other way on these type situation until someone gets hurt. And I also agree, that mother's should be told as an option they can have sterilization to keep from having children, agian this is failure on the medical field because some would opt for such proceedures but whether it be insurances not covering the proceedure or physicians refusing to do the procedure just because of the age of the mother and the guilt of whether she would want more children. Don't know what intervention was done for this child or the mother, but society always looks the other way until someone gets hurt. It is the lack of our system that truely hurt this child repeatedly. This mother may get jail term, treatment but the child will carry the scars deeper then what shows on the outside. This child will question for years WHY?

Everyone knows that if you dont boil them first for a while then the meat is a little tough. A good boiling before you put them on the fire makes the meat fall right off the bone. Hell, you dont even need A1 on it most of the time.

someone needs to stick that woman in boiling water, and give her some of her own medicine. No, parenting classes won't help someone like her. She's too far gone in my book. do as the Bible says- "An eye for and eye".

Soul Shaker- ppl not only make me sad but when it comes to situations like this, ppl make me sick! I have two beautiful baby boys and not once throughout my post partum have I ever thought of hurting my children!! I think its sad these mothers are getting away w/ hurting/killing their babies because they blame post partum, and Texas is one of the worst states for that!!
