OK folks, here's the thing... little ole Somerset, KY trying to pretend it's playing a big time city. Too funny. This hideous $8.5 million dollar multi purpose center (will the police station still close before 5:00?), a half block away from the local cinema that the folks of the community were asked (years ago) to contribute funds to renovate... still looks the same to me. Those funds should be in an interest bearing account, and I'd be asking for my share back. Who do you think you're fooling? I guess it goes along with the million dollar square debockle! Funds better used elsewhere...

Against progress? The needs have to suit the stature of it's surrounds... Need I go into further detail? Like the decaying buildings that line the town itself? Start small and go from there.

I'm against anything that keeps 26% of the children in Kentucky in poverty. When our people are no longer living in poverty, then you can talk about progress.800.000 Kentuckians live in poverty.
obama is elected, saying he is going to close down the coal industry.Show me the progress. That means all electric bills are going to double, don't blame Recc,or KU.Show me the progress in this thinking. It is going to devastate the Appalachian peoples.Which are already in proverty.

Not really sure what the OP was going on about but, the City of Somerset does need a new Police Station and City Hall. Currently, administration officies are scattered all over downtown. They need to all be under one roof.
Now, the design of the proposed Energy Center (City Hall) does leave alot to be desired. A building with such a radiusd front will have lots of unuseable space and add significantly to the cost of construction. Surely there is a better design that combines both functionality and esthetic attractiveness into one nice package?

Althouth "westwood" called me a "CAP" he now conterdicts him/herself to prove my very point. The little town should act like just that and put these "found" funds were they are so very badly needed. I am all for progress, but when you live in one of the poorest states in the nation, put your money where it truly does belong. Back door politics is alive, well and thriving.

Has that job been bid out yet?

8.5 million dollars for a place that'll only be occupied 40 hours a week.

Craziness. Just like our big expensive library and square. I'm not against progress I'm just against wastefulness.

I agree about wastefulness. Why would you build a facility out of glass. It should be built to withstand time and vandals. It does not have to be pretty, just functional. But it easier to spend other peoples money.

This is all part of the downtown revitalization project. Funding is in the form of a loan from the federal government, the Department of Agriculture to be exact. The city had enough smarts to figure out a cheap way to get this done, something the folks who want to restore the VIrginia Theater haven't been able to.

Why? Are the current buildings unsafe? Are they ridiculously inefficient to heat and cool? With phones and fax machines, what is the need for building consolidation especially in the face of people like Timothy MacVeigh. Not having everything in one building sounds good to me.

It doesn't revitalize anything to take out loans that you can't repay especially if the current system works. More debt is not something to aspire to.

Get used to it folks, Somerset is trying to out grow it's one horse town status and all the kicking and screaming and nostalgic articles in the paper talking about the good old days isn't going to change that. Besides, if I am not mistaken, Somerset is one of the most financially "healthy" small cities in Kentucky with a negligible debt load. Unlike the county library, the city has the ability to easily repay the loan without raising taxes. Since this is a multi purpose facility (gas hub HQS and city government offices) it should deliver a lot of bang for the bucks. I say good on!

Government does not produce anything except debt to tax payers.

How in the world can they justify the renovation of the square. I bet anyone in this county could make a very nice square downtown for maybe $20,000.00.

Really? Without government who's going to build and maintain the roads and pay for all the infrastructure necessary to a community? What about police, fire and ems, schools, and libraries? These are the just the basics and most folks aren't willing to do without them. Are you?

I'm getting the feeling that some of you don't understand what the gas hub is all about and what it will mean to the community in terms of revenue and jobs. It's a huge financial achievement for Somerset. Co-locating city offices in the new monitoring building is simply a cost saver and a smart move. There's been a lot in the press about this development over the last year. Here's just one article from a year ago.

Maybe this a good idea after all.One good explosion will make the downtown area easier to redevelop. There will be no expense for razing the existing buildings.
