So who owns these liquor stores that appear to be mom and pop operations? I'm guessing the price of liquor will be like the price of gas in this town...
Rite Aid has the absolute lowest prices around. In Lexington Rite aid liquor prices are lower than liquor barn.

I just talked to a friend that works with ABC and the city to co-ordinate the alcohol coming to Somerset. He told me the five business' to get the licenses were Kroger, CVS, Liquor World, Rite-Aid, and First Stop Party Supply.

What's up with the Mayor getting behind an out of town business like Liquor World? You would think he would stand up for local businesses that didn't get picked

What a travesty that Liquor world was shut out. They were going to hire 25 people and sink 5 million into renovating a run down mini mall. They got shut out of corbin too. Then, when they sued the state, the state gave them another middle finger and shut them out of someset. Eddie's working on it and hopefully he can get it straightened out. If walgreens or CVS are the only shows in town..variety will be sorely lacking and I'll be driving to Richmond again spending all my money..well some of my money to get a decent wine selection.Good job State of kentucky..you really screwed us on this one. Option #2..,the COUNTY GOES WET!!!!!!!!!! Then maybe Barty (Im a fiscal conservative republican but want to tax the crap out of everyone with a job )Bullock wont go begging for our income..uh i mean our occupational tax.

Unless i'm mistaken the Mayor is an elected official. Elected by the citizens of Somerset to serve the interest of the people of Somerset. It is down right a slap in the face to any individual or business within the city for him to go to bat for an out of town store that has been getting rich off this community for years. So they said they would invest 5 million dollars. How much of there profits would stay in this community after the initial investment? I can answer that....None of them. Since when did giving some local business a chance become such a bad thing? No one really has any idea at this point what kind of store the three locals that where chosen will have but having those three options in addition to the pharmacies will give patrons 5 options rather than one Mega store making it impossible for them to exist.

I think the mayor is right on the money.

I predict that the first store to go under will be the one in the mall.

Just saying.

You have just illustrated why Somerset will always be a backwater nothing. The wet initiative was about job's and economic prosperity, not about making some local bubba rich. Liquor World would have employed 25-30 people, while a small mom and pop store will probably hire 5 or 6. There were 5 licenses available. I see nothing wrong with one going to someone from out of town who is willing to pour some money into revitalizing a run down piece of property so that more businesses (and more jobs) would come to the area. I don't like the mayor, but on this I agree with him. This was a big loss for the city and I agree that he should try and do something about it.

Another thing to remember is the County and Somerset are controlled by Republicans while the state is controlled by Democrats.

This was in another thread:
"According to the Secretary of State, Apple's Wine & Liquor is Wanda Johnson and Wildcat Beer, Wine and Spirits is Maria Daniels"

Apples Wine and Spirit is a chain of stores scattered across the U.S.

Whether you are right or wrong about the mall store depends upon whether there is another one further south--closer to McCreary County. Those poor people cannot afford to drive further than necessary to get their goodies.

well now maybe for at least a short time u won't have all the old people walking the perimiter of the mall to get there exercise because they will protest the mall carrying liquour now, and the mall business will drop off due to liqour being sold, just like the same crap this town is famous for, i think it was ridiculous to give a lic for a mall liqour store, bet big bucks were paid for that!!

A liquor store in the mall will feel no disdain from the walkers - We walk -talk-sit-loaf-speculate-and , occasionally get thirsty - Even tho I wont be buyin', welcome new business to the mall -

You are some preacher wanna be trying to get your kicks off controlling other people. Most people don't mind if HArry Potter plays in the mall just like most people will not be offended by a liquor store in the mall. Get off your broom and fly home. We don't need you anymore.

It still makes no sense why liquor world was denied. There would have been construction jobs from the renovation and with a store that size they would have hired at least 10-12 full time employees. Very strange.
