The Bible is thousands of year behind modern times and needs to be replaced by a modern edition.

It shouldn't be replaced. It should be discarded, or at least shelved in the mythology section where it belongs.

If people would abide by these few rules, this would be a better nation. In this way the bible has served its purpose.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's

Where is the command for the parents to treat their children well? Where is the injunction against child rape?

It's hard to take "thou shalt not kill" seriously when the rule-maker, God, is the leading cause of death in the Bible. Where is the law prohibiting genocide?

There is nothing wrong with coveting others' property. It spurs competition, innovation and the economy. Where is the rule against the ownership of other people, slavery?

It's cute how the women are lumped in with the asses? Women are viewed as little more than property.

<quoted text>
Women were included with the animals because according to the ancient tribes, like animals, they WERE property and didn't have souls. In fact when the early church was debating the politics of which cannons should be included in the bible and which should be left out, there was a strong push to include the concept of soulless women within the broader articles of faith. In many early church communities women and men shared the pastoring responsibility equally, and this didn't sit well with many of the male centric factions in Rome, who because of sheer numbers ultimately succeeded in marginalizing women within the church.

OK, now concentrate, what I said we would be a better nation. I can not remember coveting someone elses property. That is so small. That does not spur competition, it spurs greed. I have pointed out a few times on topix, that god was the worse mass murderer of all times.

"what I said we would be a better nation." We will be a better nation when people discard Bronze Age mythology and join the modern era. There is nothing in the Ten Commandments unknown to people before they were written. We don't need mythology to tell us how to behave. Religion gets its few morals from humans and not the other way around.

"I can not remember coveting someone elses property. That is so small. That does not spur competition, it spurs greed." It might make you greedy, but it doesn't have that effect on everyone.

"I have pointed out a few times on topix, that god was the worse mass murderer of all times." So you admit that, in Judeo-Christianity, the Ten Commandments were inspired by a genocidal maniac? What is the purpose for quoting them again? And why do you leave out some of the commandments?

It would probably be useful to try to get the most openminded and kind people from many religions together with secular humanist types and try to work out some general ethical principles, and also some specifics. The 10 commandments are obviously not the 10 most important statements about what is cruel and what is kind. I think there might be a general agreement on a better list, if people were not insisting that the 10 came from God to Moses.

wow, I agree with you that it is greedy to covet someone else's property, and act upon it. I agree with you that either the Biblical God or the more general creator God would be the worse mass murderer of all times, in fact, an allpowerful God would be the only murderer.

excuse me, but the two of you who seem to be in an argument, are either quibbling or misunderstanding each other, I suspect. I do not think you should accuse the other person of being made greedy - the other person could very well - as in my case - be the victim of someone else's greed, and may have had to defend himself against that other person - or corporation or bank. what is the cause of your hostility toward the person who seem to argue with? I do not see the basis of the phrase "so you admit" which is like an assertion by a prosecutor.

what have I missed? has there been a past argument, or misunderstanding? if you are close in your views, to each other, and also to mine, then why should we argue among ourselves when there are likely to be rightwing fundies attracted to this thread, whom we will all oppose?

parents should respect and be kind to children also. one can kill in self-defense or in defense of other innocents. one should not steal, or cheat in ways that might be lawful, but are unethical. one should not not bear false witness against anyone, but it is ok to lie a little to save onesself or others, if it does not put the blame on an innocent. as to the adultery one, what century are we in - though shalt not commit adultery without using a condom. leave out the his's. leave out the part about God giving the land to anyone, that looks like a chosen people and a promised land excuse for driving out Indians, Palestianians, and others in other lands.
you were misunderstood I think. take a look at Matthew 25 and see if those suggestions are also very good - and the threat of hell very bad. I suspect that you and I and the person in argument with you are all more or less in agreement, and just haven't spelled it out fully yet.

You really have a comprehension problem, don't you?
I never called them the ten commandments, you put that phrase in.
If a person covets another persons possessions, It creates envy and greed.Look up covet.
Are you so dissatisfied with your self, That you have to have a negative attitude, just to hear yourself rattle, or are you a closet christian?
