Russell Co. Just getting word from Chris Davidson, who's out at the Lake Cumberland Poker Run, that there was a fatal crash there that has, at least temporarily, shut down the event. He heard the boat that crashed was the "Pammy" boat previously owned by Dan Zwisler and now owned by Kevin Sellars of Indianapolis. Not 100% sure of that, trying to get more info.

It's being reported that Kevin Sellars, owner of the Pammy boat, died in the crash. His passenger, Craig Stumpe, was injured but apparently not very seriously. I was told that neither was wearing lifejackets.

The running of the 2008 Lake Cumberland Poker Run was called off today, after a tragic accident happened shortly after the first flight of very high speed boats departed from State Dock on the first leg of the run toward Conley Bottom and Burnside Marinas.

According to reports, a catamaran based in Greenwood IN flipped on a boat wake while traveling at a speed of around 130 miles per hour. The pilot and passenger were pulled from the water by bystanders and water patrol, and rushed to the ramp at Jamestown Mariana, where they were transferred to EMS ambulance and taken to the ER at Russell County Hospital in Russell Springs.

Russell County Coronor Larry Skaggs is reported by local radio WJRS-104.9 as confirming the driver died from his injuries. The name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The pilot reportedly underwent continuous CPR on the way in, while the passenger reportedly suffered broken bones. According to the radio report, the passenger was being stabilized at the local hospital. A helicopter was standing by pending a decision on whether to relocate him to a large facility.

The incident happened in the vicinity of Difficulty Creek. This is around the bend east-bound and uplake from State Dock and Wolf Creek. It is the first larger creek section of the lake on the south shore just as the lake turns left to head east. The next lake section from that point is Harmon Creek.

The rest of the actual "run" has been called off. The poker cards are being drawn on the dock by the registered participants. The rest of the event on the dock is still scheduled.

Several of the fast boats in the first flight made high speed runs up the lake and back, unaware of the incident. The majority of the large fleet of fast boats were not started. There were thousands of spectators on the shorelines of the lake as well as thousands of boats with spectators along the course to watch.

Evidentally she has no heart nor soul. Go to LakeCumberland.com for more info. It doesn't matter who the persons involved are--they still have family & friends whom loved them & will be missed. I have been unforunate enough to have been in 2 diff unrelated boating accidents & from first hand knowledge I know for a fact how it affects people, & how long it took me to even get back on the water after each accident. I am no way scared of the lake, but I do have a much better respect for it than I did 20 years ago when the accidents accured. But there's not a time that I am on the lake that I don't think about the ones involved, dead or alive & I relive it almost every day of my life because I live on the lake. Hope she thinks twice before opening her piehole again. All prayers go out to each of the families & all the ones in the Poker Run, cause it does have a devastating affect on people that witness these accidents. And by the way COWgirl I still visit the grave of the man that was killed before my very eyes 20 years ago, so don't tell me that people will forget by tomorrow. Thanks so much for your 2 cents worth, but it isn't needed in a time like this. It's people like you that makes horrible times like this that much worse, keep your opinions to yourself if it isn't justified.

My heart goes out to the family and everyone involved with the accident today. We were spectators around the Conley area & knew something was terribly wrong when the first group of boats passed and then no one followed. My prayers are with the families and friends of those involved.

I have lived in Conley Bottom for 12 years & have grown to know & love my neighbors which consist of Buckeyes & Hoosiers. We're all human no matter where we're from & need to respect other families when in a time of grief. I'm a reneck hillbilly however my neighbors show me respect as do I them--that's what it's all about.. RESPECT FOR OTHERS--something COWgirl seems to not have any clue to the definition of this word. Prayers to all on the lake as well as on land. May God have mercy on her soul for the statements she's made about this accident & loss of life.

It's called a sporting event--just as Nascar, however--no matter--a life was lost. I didn't know the guy, don't have to in order to feel compassion for the family & friends that did. A life is a life no matter whether is Dale Earnhardt or this man. I was a huge fan of Dale's, but who's to say this man that lost his life today was not worthy of living. It's not my place to say whom is worthy of living just as it isn't anyone elses. God Bless Us Everyone

Nascar is a sanctioned sport, a poker run is not.
