Since I have heard about the unimaginable tragedy in Connecticut, I have not been able to keep this out of my mind for long. I have talked with my neighbor who is a retired police officer, he said that he would be willing to volunteer at a school so many days a week for security. Are there more retired officers who would be willing to help? We need more protection for our children! My heart absolutely aches for these families. It makes me want to tell my kids every minute how much I love them and how special they are.

Most school shootings so far fit the profile of having three (maybe more) things in common:
1) They have taken place in a designated gun-free zones
2) The perps have a record of mental instability
3) They perps have been white
5) Maybe an obsession with violent video games

I don't have an answer but I'd certainly start with REINSTATING the ban on assault rifles.

As tragic as this was, the odds of kids getting shot at school are really astronomically low. Turn off the news for a few days and ease your mind. Your kids will be fine.

Bringing weapons into schools is not only a bad idea, but unnecessary. We tend to over react in this country. One failed attempt at shoe bombing and we now ALL have to remove our shoes at airports. It's silly.

I agree, you don't have an answer. Assault rifle bans are the typical solution for people that don't have an answer. Such bans would do nothing to stop this kind of violence and are therefore pointless to even discuss.
Without giving a knuckle-dragging, pat NRA response, what's your reasoning for not reinstating the ban?

Metal detector, guards, and entrances not made out of glass. Compare courthouse shootings to school shootings and see the effects of these measures. But they cost money. Money the lawmakers don't want to put up so they don't even talk about these sort of thing except for their own protection

I responded to you on another thread about this so incase you missed it I will explain again.

Prison inmates can make an "assault weapon" out of a toothbrush. More people die from handgun violence in American than with what you call an "assault rifle" so why single out the semi-auto rifles?

Even if you ban all future sales of semi-auto rifles, there will still be hundreds of thousands of them on the street so how will this ban stop a madman?

We have armed guards in banks to protect our money so why not give that same importance to our children?

My solution is that the American public pour just as much passion into letting Washington D.C. know we will not settle for a half ass effort as they did the election. This is way more important in my book

I would like to see some of the billions of dollars we give out in foreign aid be put to use making our schools safer. A few billion would put a lot of Americans to work making it a stronger and safer place for our children. I would have called out the national guard on day one to protect our kindergarten and elementary schools until better measures could be taken.

This gun ban that's coming is not going to work and it will only cause more division in our country. We are wasting time speaking of tougher laws, we are risking our children's lives while everyone debates the issue. I fear copy cat shooters and with the constant media coverage going on, it only makes it worse.

Funny how the same people that need guns because Obama wants to create a police state are lobbying for the creation of a police state.

The Sandy Hook shooter Lanza was a satanist, and satan worship is a typical LGBTQ juvenile reaction to christian morality.

The mother of Lanza was homeschooling him in christian morality.

Probably should consider re-labeling homosexuality as a mental disease. As a recognized mental disease, special public attention can be focused on such people, to keep them away from kids.

That's what we pay the NRA for
