A Laurel County teacher and his wife are facing misdemeanor child abuse charges after their 2-year-old was found with severe bruising on the hips buttocks and lower back by daycare personnel.

Chandler Scott Cook, 27, who teaches social studies at South Laurel Middle School and Jaclyn Amanda Cook, 26, were each charged with one count of fourth-degree assault --(child abuse) Thursday following an investigation by Kentucky State Police detectives Mark Allen and Mike Bowling.

KSP Lt. Curtis O'Bannon said daycare personnel contacted social services after finding the bruises about 8:30 a.m. Social services then reported the incident to Kentucky State Police. The Cooks were brought to KSP Post 11 in London as part of the investigation. Though the Cooks declined to make any statements, O'Bannon said the investigation revealed the child had been struck multiple times. O'Bannon said police are continuing to investigate what the child may have been struck with.

"It doesn't appear the bruising was accidental," O'Bannon said, noting the injuries were not life-threatening.

O'Bannon said the child was taken to Saint Joseph-London for examination. The child and a sibling have been removed from the Cooks' custody and placed with family members.

Assistant Superintendent Greg Smith said Scott Cook has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, as per school policy.

"He will not be at school or have any teaching responsibilities," Smith said.

Smith said in his time with the school system, this is the first time he has seen this situation involving a school system employee.

The Cooks pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday in Laurel District Court. They have been released from jail on bond pending the outcome of the case.

Under Kentucky Law, fourth-degree assault is a misdemeanor charge carrying a potential sentence of up to one year in jail.

it wasnt' a matter of a babysitter calling social services, it was the daycare. and even had the child fell on a toy you wouldn't think it would bruise the child on the butt and the back.

Weird.... I dated this guy in college. I also used to work for Child Protective Services, and I learned that there is no "type" of person who abuses a child. Anyone and everyone is capable. Just because someone is a "good person", doesn't mean they can't lose their temper and go to far.

What is the latest? Is he back at school? Do they have the kids back? I think you kids who had him should report the abuse you saw him do in class. Verbal abuse is bad too.

First of all since the somerset CWJ and radio ran this story over and over again. Second of all, Scott has been back at school for months. They never lost their children. The Cooks are good people and you all should just leave them alone.

Well, I have a 6 month old and let me tell you he gets bruises all the time from where he just learned to crawl. Actually he has 2 bruises on the inside of his thighs where we gets so excited from his bouncer he jumps all over the place. Someone could accuse us of molestation but that doesn't make it true. He also was crawling the other day and slipped due to hardwoods, smacking his face into the floor. Needless to say he now has a purple and blue nose...

I by no means are defending them because I don't know if it happened or not. BUT I do know that a 2 year old is prone to a lot of mischief. I have 10 brothers and sisters, my youngest is a 2 year old. He is ALWAYS getting boo boos. Plus a bruise on his back and his hip? Well what if he fell in the tub, on the steps, or just got 2 different bruises at 2 different times. I'm just saying things happen. Hopefully he wasn't being beaten but if I took my son to daycare and they tried to say we were molesting my child or beating him I would be furious they didnt contact me first to atleast ask if I knew anything.

Dear Kameron, I hope he was not your English teacher or he should be arrested for impersonating a teacher. Gee, child, you cannot spell and have no clue about grammar.
