What other banks charge fees for cashing checks? I manage a number of properties, times are tough fo rsome people, so I try to cash and clear my tenants checks as fast as possible to avoid outstanding checks and possible fees. BB&T is the ONLY bank that has ever charged me to cash a check, I now offer a $5 discount for not paying with a BB&T check. Worth it to me, just to make a point, 8 tenant have already switched their accounts.

Name one other back that charges $5 to cash a check drawm on that bank. I manage a number of properties. BB&T charges me everytime I cash a check there, most of my tenants are great, but every now and then a check bounces, I like to make sure the funds are there to avoid understandable charges from my bank, plus it is more convenient and easy for the tenant to keep their books balanced. I now offer a $5 dollar discount for NOT using a BB&T check. I would rather pay the money back to the tenants that patronize me than the bank, 8 tenants have already closed and moved their accounts, it saves them $60 a year on rent!

Well, I bank at BB&T and I love it, free checks, free accounts... What else can I ask for, oh, and I love their online banking... Anyway, the $5 dollar thing is correct, but tell the whole truth... If you deposit or cash the check at your personal bank there is no fee... If you take the check straight to BB&T and you don't have an account, then yes there is a $5 fee.... A little crazy, but, they do... But, if you have a bank account somewhere else, then this isn't a big deal. As far as Citizens, I think they are a bunch of a$$es, especially the nancy bunch... won't comment on what they are. I had a meeting with the loan officer once and took off work to meet with her to get a loan, when I got there, she had taken someone else (probably more money) and because of that, I wasted half a vacation day for an appointment that I was rudely routed out off... Needless to say, I left them shortly after and went to first and farmers, but wasn't to fond of them either.... Of all the banks I have tried, I like BB&T the best...

IF YOU TRY TO CASH A BB&T CHECK, THEY WILL ONLY CHARGE YOU IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM. BUT THAT IS TRUE WITH EVERY BANK I'VE EVER HEARD OF. BB&T IS NO WORSE THAN ANY OF THE OTHER BIGGER BANKS OUT THERE. WACHOVIA, ON THE OTHER HAND, IS A MUCH DIFFERENT STORY.

If they are the paying bank, they should not be charging. That is to say, if their customers writes a check against funds deposited in BB&T then they have an obligation to "pay" the funds to the person the check is made payable to. I think you better check your facts. I have never known BB&T to charge anyone (including non-customers) a fee to cash any the checks I have written to anyone.

I'm sorry to say that BB&T does NOT offer free checks anymore. I've been with them ever since we moved here about 6 years ago and received the benefits of free checks. I ordered some more an found out via my check statement, that they charged me almost %17.00 for a new box of checks. And I didn't order on the net, but at the bank and they never said anything to me. Surprise, surprise!!

I am looking for another back who offers free checking as well as checks. If I can't find one in Somerset, I'll go back to my old bank, Wacovia. I loved that bank, however they don't have one close. I do all my banking on the net anyway, so no problem there. And if you want to pay bills online, they pay the very next day, not a week later. Sighhhhhh.

BBT sucks. They are worse than a starved pack of mosquitos. They will charge anyway they can. How ever they can. The people are nice that work there but the fees and how they charged are freaking insane.

BBT won't even help you if you bouce a check they always tell you that you have to see the main lady and she is never available so in the meantime you get all those high late charges for each and every day. I can not believe thier customer care, it sucks. I went online and just typed in the bank and oh my goodness, they have so many complaints and so many lawsuits against them, it is unreal. Needles to say I am no longer a BBT customer, they really are a rip off!

I don't care where you bank -- writing a check when you don't have the funds to cover it is the same as stealing. It used to be against the law -- and in my view still should be.

I had an account with BB&T...I deposited an unemployment check on a Thursday, before 11:00. The same day I wrote checks on the account and they bounced them, saying that the Unemployment check I deposited takes 72 hours to clear. Over 300.00 in overdraft fees. I refused to pay it then, and I refuse to pay it now and they can throw my ass in jail before I will ever pay it. Such BS. I could have just gone to Walmart, paid them 3 bucks and they would have cashed it on the spot. How about your own bank making you wait 72 hours for a state check to clear?

So let me get this straight. YOU didn't understand your own banks policies regarding deposits and overdrafts and you yet blame them for YOUR ignorance. Every bank I have ever had accounts with gave me tons of information on their policies and procedures. Somehow I doubt that BB&T is any different. Perhaps you SHOULD stick to cashing your government handout checks at Walmart. I'm pretty sure none of the local banks would even notice.

I agree! They don't value good customers either. I had been with them 8 years, never had overdrawn or wrote a bad check. Then earlier this year they started charging a $12 a month "maintenance fee". At first I was exempt because I had a monthly direct deposit.
This direct deposit was temporarily discontinued for just one month. They refused to waive the maintenance fee.
So I took my business somewhere else and got a better deal!

Unemployment checks are not a government hand out. The person who gets them has to pay taxes/ pay in to get it. If one doesn't work long enough they are not eligible. And yes, one must show they have been looking for work to continue getting benefits. This is nothing like welfare checks, sort of like Social Security.

@Common sence: If you are getting more than one check from more than one person: are you going to switch banks and open an account for them all? Big bankers made BILLIONS per year before this scam; now they make that much more. Not to pay the tellers or managers more or help ease the cost on customers but to simply make a gain. Business = Profit. My gf uses BB&T; I don't but, even though, their name is on the check we will have to pay them to give each other money? Something needs to be done.
