What the heck is going on

Murray, KY

We just moved here two years or so ago and had a small car back then. Our tags on the car was only about 35 dollars to renew them. But we had a baby and decided to get a used but newer van because we felt that the little car wasnt very safe. So we just get our renewal postcard in the mail and they are saying the tags on the van will be almost 120 dollars! What the hell is this all about? We called and were told that they go on the value of the vehicle and there was no mistake so this is what we will have to pay to get our tags renewed. If this is true then what does a tag cost for some body who has a brand new van that they already paid off? We paid ours off in cash when we bought it and there is no payments due. Why are the tags so high on a van and not a regular car? Can some body who also drives a van please tell me what you pay for the renewal on your tags? I'm going to contact the state to see whats up with this. Something aint right and those people at the tag office where no help at all!

It depends on the value of your car, it doesn't have anything to do with how much you paid for it or whether it is a van or not. My guess is your other car was pretty much worthless and that is why your taxes are so much. To give you an idea, one of our vehicles is a 97 Toyota truck and taxes on it are about $130. So no, you are not being over charges. This is not a sales tax, but basically a usage tax.

And BTW, this tax is regulated by Frankfort and the Dept of Revenue, not someone in Somerset.

Basically it depends on county taxes for everyone in the state of Kentucky. After that it is based on the value of your vehicle and has nothing to do if it is paid off or not. So if your car was worth say $10,000 and the van was worth $20,000 then clearly you will have more to pay. It isn't based on a flat fee for everything. The only thing that is a flat fee is for the plate, which is $21. I wish it were based on if the car was paid off or not...would save this old boy some money.

Hope that helps

We have one car that costs us about $30 to license. We maade the mistake of buying a new SUV, and it costs over $300 to license it. I'll drive the damn thing till the wheels fall off before I buy another new vehicle in KY. Now I know why so many people drive crap cars. Between the license and insurance, the people of KY get screwed regularly.

We got quite a shock ourselves this time for our tag renewals. So don't feel like you're being singled out. I have lived in other states that didn't rake you over the coals like Kentucky does. And one in particular had no state or city taxes either.
(Figure that one out)....

The insurance rates here are also pretty ridiculous in my opinion. For a state that is supposedly so full of "poverty stricken people", it seems like they're sure making their people pay an exorbitant amount of fees and taxes..

After reading the above, I pulled out my 2011 and 2012 Motor Vehicle Tax and/or Registration Renewal Notice and did a comparison.

The registration fee was the same in both years as was the tax rate for the State, County, County Schools, Library, and the Extension Service. The only tax rate that increased was for the County Health Department and the increase was 0.01. As both vehicles were devalued due to age, my total registration/tax bill decreased -- as expected -- from $559.13 to $$539.10.

I doubt that anyone is a fan of personal property taxes. However, most folks do understand the concept and realize that when you buy a newer or more expensive vehicle you are going to pay more in taxes. It's just basic math.

FYI: Insurance rates are not based on how many "poverty stricken people" are in the state, They are based on accident rates, the condition and the types of roads and the number of uninsured drivers in the state. Kentucky insurance rates are primarily higher because of the vast number of two lane roads and the above average number of accidents that occur on them. Our insurance rate increased significantly when we moved here from a major metropolitan area, which according to insurance actuarial tables is a safer place to drive than rural KY.

I argue with the DMV every year when its time for them to screw me again. example, buy a truck for 18k pay 6% tax, now a year later the DMV says the same truck is worth 22k and I must pay tax on that amount,,, WTF my truck went up in value???? went to a dealer to see what I could get in trade,,,12k was the offer. so what is up with that? KY tax payers unite and change this stupid ( we make you pay tax on the value we choose ) law.

You might want to see what the NADA value is. Trade in value is NEVER what the value of the vechile is. That is what the state goes by. Just guessing here. Could it be you traded in on a car and what you ended up paying was 18K.....you would have had some value in the trade that was applied to they were actually asking price. Say it was 24K they applied a value of 6K for your trade so you pay 18....but the value of the truck still is 24K. Did your value say 18K last year on what you took to get your tags? Because you are correct that a car shouldn't go up in value like that.
